Primary election filing
Filing for a place on the primary ballots begins Dec. 3 and continues until 6 p.m. Jan. 4.
A long-time Victoria attorney and former prosecutor announced Friday he'll be running for the County Court-at-Law No. 2 judge post.
"It's something I have wanted to do for some time," attorney Dan Gilliam said. "I've got the experience and qualifications and a vested interest in the community."
The position has been held by Juan Velasquez III since it was created in September 1983. Velasquez said he will not seek re-election.
Gilliam, 48, said he will seek the Republican nomination in the March 2 primary.
"I just would like to serve the county of Victoria again," he said. "I did it for nine years."
He worked as the assistant criminal district attorney under George Filley from 1990 to 1998. He handled misdemeanor and felony cases and civil bond forfeitures.
Gilliam also argued appellate cases before the 13th Court of Appeals in Corpus Christi and the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin.
He supervised the misdemeanor department and prosecuted cases in both of the county courts-at-law. Gilliam was in charge of felony probation revocation hearings and appellate cases.
He also served as an adjunct professor at The Victoria College in 1998 and 1999, teaching criminal law and procedure.
He has had a private civil practice for 11 years in the Victoria area that included real estate, banking, oil and gas, wills, probate and trust matters.
Gilliam has been with the law firm of Marr, Meier and Bradicich, L.L.P. in Victoria for more than eight years. He worked as a commercial law litigator with the firm of Ross, Banks, May, Cron and Cavin in Houston from 1986 to 1990.
He was admitted to practice law in Texas in November 1986.
He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Texas A&M University in 1982 and a doctorate of jurisprudence from the South Texas College of Law in Houston in 1986.
Gilliam and wife, Jamie, are both from Victoria and have two daughters. Valerie is a second-year student at Texas A&M and Annie is a freshman at St. Joseph High School.
The are members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Victoria.
