The 24th Annual Victoria Czech Heritage Festival will be Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Victoria Community Center, 2905 E. North St.

The festival is sponsored by the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society and has drawn well over 1,000 people annually for more than two decades.

The festival begins with a televised Czech-English Mass at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral in Victoria at 9 a.m. The Rev. Joseph Hybner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flatonia will celebrate the Mass.

Events at the community center begin promptly at 10 a.m. with local accordionist Pat Matula kicking off the musical entertainment.

The Shiner Hobo Band takes over at 11 a.m. and entertains all until 1 p.m. followed by the Czechaholics, a fairly new, young and popular band. Then the Red Ravens Band will join the Czechaholics at 4 p.m. for a 30-minute concert. The Red Ravens follow solo continuing with good dancing music for all until 7:30 p.m.

Michelle Jenee Barak, 2009 Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen, will make an appearance at the festival. She is the daughter of Alan and Marita (Novak) Barak of Ennis and is a member of the Ellis County Czech Heritage Society.

The fourth Annual Homemade Beer and Wine Show is expected to draw about 100 entries from home and small backyard brewers and vineyards from across the state.

Classes for each division are: Beer - light, amber, dark and novelty; and Wine - dry and sweet classes of red, white, novelty, and kit wines, plus a dessert wine. New this year is a special class for mustang grapes.

Wine and beer tasting will be offered after the judging.

Cultural demonstrations will be held in the art of "Home Canning - Pickled Vegetables" by Steve Orsak, native of Victoria and two time food presenter for the Smithsonian Museum Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. His wife, Betty Orsak, will also demonstrate "Making Jelly - Texas Style" with dewberries, grapes, cacti and pears. Dorris Raska, of Victoria, will show how to "Churn Cream into Butter."

Meals of Czech stew and sausage will be served for $7 per plate beginning at 11 a.m.

Also available will be fruit and sausage kolaches and homemade chicken noodle soup. Sausage wraps are available after lunch.

Other activities include an auction, children's games, pastry wheel, arts and crafts, numerous exhibit booths and a Czech Heritage Museum exhibit.

Last but not least, the 24th Texas State Tarok (card) Tournament will be held as card players come from throughout the state to compete for prize money shuffling these unique cards that Czechs have played for centuries.
