The Songwriters' Workshop will be Oct. 2-4 in Aransas Pass and Victoria. Cost is $75. For more information or to register, call Lois Cochran at 361-275-8933 or e-mail her at lcochran2694@yahoo.com.

South Texas may not be a national hub for music like Austin, but that doesn't mean the area is short on talent.

To help foster the musical talent in the area, musician Lois Cochran is hosting a Songwriters' Workshop Oct. 2-4 in Aransas Pass and Victoria, along with the help of Susan Pyle, Mary Downing and Karen Lee Rystad.

"There are a lot of talented musicians in the area that have a lot to offer," Cochran said about why they are putting on the workshop. "Plus, it's also fun to get together and play with people who love music as much as you do."

Cochran added that she was inspired after attending the Kerrville Folk Festival this year and seeing the workshops they put on.

"We thought it would be nice to do something similar locally," she said.

Cochran has enlisted the help of several accomplished musicians to do presentations at the workshop. Topics include song analysis, lyric writing, developing songs and key changes.

Among the presenters will be Pyle, David Stockton, Britt Lloyd, John Allen, Barbara Cavanaugh, Jack Motley and award-winning songwriter KC Clifford.

"KC is amazing," Cochran added.

A native of Oklahoma, Clifford has released three albums and was a two-time recipient of the Woody Guthrie Award, as well as being twice chosen as a New Folk finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival. In addition to giving a presentation on lyric writing and changing melodies, Clifford will also perform live on the evening of Oct. 2. She will be accompanied by her husband, musician David Broyles.

The bulk of the workshop will be on Oct. 2-3 in Aransas Pass and on Oct. 4, a free performance showcase will be at the Blue Armadillo Recording Studio in Victoria, which will be hosted by Michael Weston.

The cost of the entire workshop is $75. The cost for only attending Friday is $40 and for Saturday only is $35. Meals are included and donations are being accepted to help defray the cost of the food, Cochran said.

Participants are asked to bring a chair, beverages, their instrument and pen and paper. Recording devices are allowed.
