HER JOURNEY
Laura Weiser was appointed as judge for County Court-at-Law No. 1 in 1990, filling the unexpired term of Jerry Garrett.
The appointment came after she won the Democratic primary the same year and after Garrett announced his resignation.
Laura Weiser has been the Victoria County Court-at-Law No. 1 judge for nearly 20 years, but she said she's not finished serving the community.
She announced Tuesday she is seeking the Democratic nomination next year for another term.
"I just still love what I do and I feel like I can still make a difference," Weiser, 50, said.
Weiser said two of her accomplishments that have made a difference is the creation of the Victoria County Driving While Intoxicated Court Program and the Victoria County Juvenile Services Drug Court.
Both programs combine accountability with substance abuse treatment and intense supervision. They are designed to lower the number of adults and juveniles who re-offend due to substance abuse issues.
"You really get a chance to develop a rapport with the people who come through those courts and you really get a chance to see them change," Weiser said. "This is a chance to really follow them along and see the progress they make."
Weiser moved to Victoria in 1985 and worked for Frank S. Buhler III as a law clerk. After receiving her license to practice law, she worked as a briefing attorney for Cole, Cole and Easley in Victoria.
She then worked as a staff attorney providing legal assistance to indigent clients at Coastal Bend Legal Services.
Weiser was an assistant criminal district attorney for Victoria County at the time she first sought election to the County Court-at-Law No. 1.
Weiser graduated cum laude from Houston Baptist University in 1980 with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education, special education and guidance. She received her doctor of jurisprudence in 1986 from the University of Houston Law Center.
She is an alumnus of the Texas College for New Judges, the Texas College for Judicial Studies and the National Judicial College.
Weiser is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Victoria Bar Association, the Judicial Section of the State Bar of Texas, the Juvenile Law Section of the State Bar and The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.
She served as the chair of the board of directors of the Judicial Section of the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Center for the Judiciary in 2005 and 2006. She currently serves as chair of the Long Range Planning Committee for the Texas Center for the Judiciary.
Weiser teaches for the Texas Center for the Judiciary and the Texas Association of Court Administrators. She is a member of the faculty of the Texas College for New Judges.
In 2009 she received the Mari Kay Bickett Judicial Excellence Through Education Award from the Texas Center for the Judiciary.
Weiser serves on the advisory board for the Victoria College Police Academy and the Texas Association of Court Administrators. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Victoria and a former board member of that organization.
Weiser is a member of First United Methodist Church, where she serves as an usher.
In 1998 Weiser was selected as a South Texas Woman, a recognition of seven area women sponsored by the University of Houston-Victoria, the Victoria Advocate, the Grace DeTar Women's Center and Victoria Mall. In 2007 she was the recipient of the Clayton Morrison Award from the Texas Institute on Children and Youth for outstanding service to the children of Texas.
Weiser is married to Juan Velasquez III, judge of County Court-at-Law No. 2. She has two children, Jessica, 25, a recent graduate of Texas Tech Law School; and Scott, 24, an auditor for Clear Channel Communications in San Antonio.
