CUERO - Cuero hadn't tried a flea flicker this season, but it came in handy against La Vernia.

Cuero used the slight of hand to ignite a third-quarter rally and ran off with a 41-16 win over the Bears on Friday night at Gobbler Stadium.

"It was one of the things we added on for the week," Cuero coach Mark Reeve said. "We had a couple of others that we didn't use. You've always got a few. You have the base offense and the trick offense."

Cuero quarterback Tyler Arndt pitched the ball to running back Trent Jackson, who took a step before turning around and pitching the ball back to Arndt. Arndt found wide receiver Aaron Bell wide open for a 66-yard touchdown pass to give the Gobblers the lead for good.

"We actually put it in our game plan for this week," Arndt said. "When I looked up, I saw Aaron running down the field wide open. Luckily my line was good enough to give me time to throw it and it paid off for us."

Bell caught the ball in stride and ran untouched to the end zone and Cuero erased a 16-13 deficit on the third play of the second half.

"We practiced it quite a bit," Bell said. "We set it up on an iso. It was exciting. I was just thinking catch it and go."

Arndt completed 11 of 16 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 38 yards and a touchdown, as No. 6 Cuero avenged last year's only regular-season loss and improved to 5-0 with its 31st consecutive win at Gobbler Stadium.

Cuero scored 21 points in the third quarter and had 195 yards of offense. Arndt also threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Adam Hengst in the quarter, and Jackson had a 22-yard touchdown run.

"We came out and made some adjustments at half," Arndt said. "I think it was just the way we stayed together. Some things weren't going for us in the first half, but we came out like our hair's on fire in the second half and pulled away with it."

Arndt threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Mason Blaschke in the first quarter and connected with Monte Green for a 27-yard touchdown pass in fourth quarter. Arndt also ran 1-yard for a touchdown in the second quarter.

"Tyler can do what he wants to do," Reeve said. "He's very talented and he's the leader of our football team."

La Vernia (3-2) gouged the Cuero defense for 204 yards in the first half, including 190 yards rushing. But the Gobblers limited the Bears to 55 yards in the second half and did not allow a first down in the fourth quarter.

"I think we just played a whole lot better than we did in the first half," Cuero linebacker Jonathan Banda said. "We came out firing and just stepped it up a whole lot and got us a victory."

The Gobblers were happy to erase the memory of last season's 21-6 defeat to La Vernia, but more excited about heading into their District 28-3A opener against Yoakum with a perfect record.

"I don't know about revenge," Arndt said. "That was last season and this is our season right now. That's what we're concentrating on and we came out with a victory."

Tighten Up: La Vernia quarterback Seth Grubbs rushed 11 times for 114 yards in the first half, including a 12-yard touchdown run with 29 seconds left that gave the Bears the lead. Grubb had four carries for 3 yards in the second half.

"They had some good schemes and they were doing some good stuff to us," Reeve said. "The biggest adjustment we made is we tackled better, we played harder, and we just came out with a little more fire."

Turnovers: Cuero's Ryan Barrientez had an interception and Nick Gamez recovered a fumble.
