Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Richards of El Campo celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Saturday September 12, 2009 at their home with family and close friends. Their children Sherilyn Jo Perilloux and husband Tom, and Joe H. Richards and wife Veronica, all of El Campo, hosted the celebration.
Joe E. Richards and Patsy (Pat) Claybourn were married on September 11, 1944, at the First Baptist Church of El Campo. The Rev. S.N. Inman performed the double ring ceremony. Following the wedding ceremony, a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Howard Claybourn, after which the couple honeymooned in Galveston. Joe and Pat are both graduates of Palacios High School; Joe in 1941 and Pat in 1943.
Lt. Richards completed Flight Instructor School at Randolph Field in San Antonio and the couple moved to Napier Field, Dothan, Alabama, where he was a flight instructor in the single-engine advance school for fighter pilots until the end of the war.
Pat and Joe retired in 1996 after 50 years in the family business, Sunshine Laundry & Dry Cleaners. Pat also wrote a society column at various times for three El Campo papers.
The Richards grandchildren are Tom Perilloux Jr. and wife Lisa of El Campo, Tia Perilloux and Jason Thompson of Dripping Springs, Patricia Portella-Wright and husband Bob of San Diego, California and Chad Richards and wife Kim of Houston. Their great-grandchildren are Celeste Portella and Colin Thompson.
The family has enjoyed leisure time at their bay home at Jensen Point for over 47 years.
