Six months ago, Clint South Texas Barbecue brought mesquite-cooked meat and "Trashcan 'Taters." Then came LuRaq's Restaurant & Beer Garden in July, with barbecue, catfish and outdoor entertainment.

With Big Mo's BBQ joining the ranks of local barbecue restaurants, it's more than just the pits heating up. Competition is, too.

Big Mo's opens Thursday at 1301 Sam Houston Drive, boasting brisket, sausage and items such as the "Big Bad Mo" sandwich.

Owned by David and Teri Moten, the 1,500-square-foot building will seat 49 people and employs 25.

Moten's father-in-law, Louis McMillan, has worked with the owners and staff on running a business and on barbecue itself. McMillan owns McMillan's Bar-B-Q & Catering in Fannin, which Texas Monthly named one of Texas' top 50 barbecue restaurants.

After 40 years in the business, McMillan said the secret to barbecue is vapor, love, vapor and understanding what you're doing. He couldn't divulge what vapor meant for risk of giving out too much information.

Big Mo's was a few years in the making, Teri Moten said.

The original plan was to develop a steakhouse, but once she and her father began hammering out details, the two butted heads. Now, years later, she said she can take her father's advice and he can accept her ideas.

The response has been good, David Moten said. The restaurant turned away about 10 people a day who went to see if it was already open, he said, and they're already looking to expand.

Employing McMillan's methods means his food will continue on for a long time, he said.

"This is like the passing of a legacy," he said. "He is known the world over."

On Wednesday afternoon, Nelda Foster pulled in to check out Big Mo's. Although Thursday is the business' grand opening, it hosted a soft opening the day before.

Foster, who has eaten at McMillan's for 40 years, said she's been waiting for Big Mo's to open.

"It's the best barbecue in town," said Foster, who is retired from the city.

It took a while to make it to opening day, but the hard work isn't behind them, McMillan said. It has to keep standards high.

"Everybody is our competition," McMillan said. "If you serve food, you're competition. But we're better than the guy down the street."

LuRaq's isn't worried, owner Joey Ornelas said. The two are on different sides of town.

"We're a one-of-a-kind place," he said, describing the live music it offers every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. "And the food speaks for itself."

Barbecue isn't the only thing on the menu, Ornelas said. Fried shrimp, catfish and other items are also available, which further sets them apart.

Each restaurant has its own method of cooking, said Clint Maddox, who owns Clint South Texas BBQ. He stands behind his food - they only cook with mesquite wood - and said he isn't worried about the new eatery.

Clint's potatoes are enough to keep people coming back, Maddox said, but there's another aspect that makes it stand out: The business gives back to the community.

Whether at Market Days, local festivals or organization fundraisers, the restaurant is usually there, he said. And he buys about 90 percent of his products locally, he said.

"Others are here to get the dollar off the people and be on their merry way," he said. "But my community is important to me."

It's not just new guys bringing finger-licking ribs and sandwiches to the region. Long-timers such as Mumphord's Place and Uncle Mutt's have offered barbecue for years.

The Corral has been around since 1952, operating in the same location under the same ownership the entire time, owner Albert Totah said.

The restaurant's variety is probably what keeps people coming back, he said. In addition to barbecue, steaks, seafood and more are available at the Houston Highway eatery.

Totah said he hadn't heard of Big Mo's and didn't want to comment on the new restaurant. As part of the Midcoast Restaurant Association, however, he said he'd like to see Big Mo's join.

Competition is heating up elsewhere, too. The Motens' 4-year-old daughter, Ayanna, has ideas for a restaurant all her own.

It's called The Unicorn, Teri Moten said, and will serve chicken, lollipops and Popsicles.

But grown-ups? Keep out. Her place is just for kids.

  • Jo's is ok. It's out on the Refugio Hiway..close to Chubby's. But for the best BBQ I've ever had, I drive to New Braunsfels and eat at Coopers. All of the meat just falls apart it's so tender.

  • No one on here has mentioned Aunt Jo's. I guess its not worth mentioning?

  • I agree with you on Whites in Port Lavaca. You must have caught the cowboy on a bad day. I have only eaten there once when it was bad. Now if you want to try really bad BBQ eat at Frontier in Edna.

  • Brothers BBQ was the best. Mumphords BBQ is okay if you like a lot of fat on your brisket and little flavor. Clints BBQ brisket is really good(havent tried anything else) he just needs to cut back on the amount of sauce he puts on his food. I want to try big mo's. As far as McMillans in Fannin goes, I stopped eating there when i got a chopped sandwich that was nothing but fat. If you are ever in Edna I recommend you try Cowboy BBQ. Big portions, great smoked flavor and fair prices. But, if you dont like smelling like smoke cowboy bbq isnt the place for you.

  • fatboy...I'm glad you finally made it there, but you didn't say where there was. You like the food but you didn't mention the name of the restaurant. No fair keeping secrets.

  • Gren...Nope, don't mind a bit. Going there for lunch Thursday.

  • I finally made it here. The flavor I must admit was good, smokey taste. Our table had plenty to eat. Its cooked rouitessiare (SP?) style I am told or some of it. The 3 meat is the plate to get. They refill your tea and you gey plenty of ice. They visit the tables and we were informed they are selling 2000+ lunch plates. I can see why. Leave your prices like this for a bit. 1 thing, you need a bigger place.

  • We tried Big Mo's for supper this evening. Very good, and a much better value (quality, portions and price) than the much celebrated LuRaqs.

  • I must say that i have tried nearly all the places around Victoria, Inez, Edna, El Campo...........and Brother's was by far better....I tell my wife everytime that they ruined bbq for me..........cuz no one else even compares. His ribs were simply the best.

    October 1, 2009 at 3:52 p.m.

  • I tryed Big Mos today and i must say the price is a little high but the food is well worth it!!!!

    October 1, 2009 at 2:32 p.m.

  • Well, I have to say I too liked Brothers...however, Mumphords was still better. In my opinion Mumphords will be a hard place to beat! The food is ALWAYS delicious, good amount for the price, and the customer service is UNBEATABLE!! Personally, I wish they would expand and put a resturant on the other side of town!

As far as Clint's is concerned...I have tried it a few times....the first time the ribs were not cooked throughly and when they were sent back they returned still cold...and the second time I went there the sausage was cold, the potato salad was warm...I did like the trashcan fries and everything else there left much to be desired!!! Also, supporting the community doesn't mean it is a good place to eat. The people that worked there seem to be very friendly to people they knew but as for others they did not really care...yes they are at events...but the food I tried there was VERY greasy on top of it!

But I do have to say that I am looking forward to trying Big Mo's and love The Unicorn idea ;)!!!

  • i love them all. in fact I rotate. some are too high w/ not enough food and some put a lot of food at the same price. good atmosphere, food, service and all of you will be ok.

  • How soon before one of these new bbq places close down? All restraunts in the area are hurting. Not sure if opening up a bbq restraunt is a good idea. BTW MUMFORD'S is still the best.

    October 1, 2009 at 11:21 a.m.

  • What ever happened to Brothers BBQ? We use to always go pick up some BBQ there when I was at home visiting the family.

    October 1, 2009 at 10:11 a.m.

  • I miss Brothers BBQ.

    October 1, 2009 at 9:55 a.m.

  • I have a major weakness for good Bar-B-que. While I will sample a few meals at a new place, it takes a lot to get my regular business.

    September 30, 2009 at 9:58 p.m.

  • I can't wait for "The Unicorn" to open! I am looking forward to giving them a shot. However, many have come and gone and Mumphords is still the best...........JMO

  • Lookin forward to trying MO's. His father in law is a hoot and we enjoy stopping in when we drive through Fannin, so hope this place will carry on the good food.
