It's only October, but the folks at the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department are already getting into the holiday spirit.
They are accepting applications for the Dec. 5 holiday parade, which will be at a new location.
It is being moved from downtown to the Victoria Community Center area because of the downtown construction work, which might be a first for the parade.
"As far as I know, for the last 20 or 25 years it has been held downtown," said Doug Cochran, Victoria's director of parks and recreation.
Recreation specialist Danielle Williams said the parade will begin at 6 p.m. at the intersection of North Street and Raab Avenue. It will move east, turning south onto Ben Wilson Street and ending at the skate park entrance.
It's 0.70 of a mile, which is about the same distance of the downtown parade route, she said.
The deadline to register for the parade is Nov. 24.
"You'd be amazed how many calls we've already had," Williams said. "On my end, I've already had 10 and the ladies up front had a lot of them, too."
About 140 registered for last year's parade and about 130 showed up. But the limit this year will be 120 because of the new location.
The Nazareth Academy choir from Victoria was the first to sign up for the 2009 parade, which has a theme of "Unwrap the Magic."
A new rule this year limits the number of vehicles from car and motorcycle clubs to 10 per group. Another new rule is that animals in the parade must be approved by the parks department.
Only 20 food vendors will be allowed on a first-come, first-served basis. They must apply in person at the parks department at Riverside Park.
They will be charged $50 each and must provide their own source of electricity, sales tax identification number and health permit.
Cochran said he's not sure what affect the move from downtown to the Community Center will have on the number of people showing up to watch the parade.
"I'm hoping people are going to treat the parade as if it was downtown," he said.
But Cochran said there wasn't much choice in moving the parade because of the downtown streets being torn up for utility construction.
"The utilities are going really, really fast and we appreciate that," Cochran said. "But the construction just won't be completed."
Parking will be provided at the Community Center, the Youth Sports Complex and possibly other nearby areas.
