The difference between Android and iPhone users
Back in February a report released by the mobile advertising company AdMob revealed some interesting details about owners of smartphones.
According to the report by AdMob, the majority of Android users are male. While Android users were 73 percent male, the gap between male and female iPhone users was closer: 57 percent male and 43 percent female. The report is based on a survey of 963 smartphone and iPod touch owners.
Perhaps the marketing for the Motorola Droid, one of the most popular Android smartphones, has something to do with this trend. The ads seem to be aimed at a male audience, with one ad calling the Droid a "robot" and comparing its speed to a "racehorse duct-taped to a SCUD missile." The same ad flashes an image of an iPhone-like device and calls the phone a "princess" and a "precious porcelain figurine of a phone." Meow.
I had the chance to test the Droid for several weeks. I agree the Android platform is fast, the Web browsing impressive and, yes, the Droid did remind me of a robot, especially when I powered it on and a manly robot-sounding voice announced "Droid."
As I stated in my full review of the Droid, I won't be trading in my iPhone just yet. I didn't pay much attention to the Droid ad campaign, so that wasn't a factor. The Droid is a great option if you are looking for a smartphone on Verizon's network. However, I prefer the usability and the design of the iPhone. So sorry, Droid, it's not you, it's me.
In the meantime I am considering building my own robot. It will have the voice of Tina Fey, make ham sandwiches on demand and bake cupcakes.
