  • What is humane depends on who and what is being looked at. If mice or rats invade a person's house, they have no problem setting a trap the smashes the brains out of the critter. But when referring to a dog or cat, gassing or using an injection is cruel even though the animal goes to sleep before it dies. What are you going to do with large masses of sometimes dangerous animals? When you bring up this problem, some say people should spay/neuter their animals. That is acceptable and not cruel? If so, maybe we should apply that rule to people that don't seem to be able to control the number of kids they produce when they are on federal assistance and can't support themselves much less the kids. Oh, spay/neuter does not sound acceptable now? My point, someone is always going to disagree no matter how the issue is addressed. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

  • wow another examlpe of what we do not know does not bother us?? i was a boxer breeder for 13 years. A responsible one. I knew where my puppies went and if I approved the sale of a puppy they left with contracts that said that if it did not work out they would be returned to me. Spay neuter contracts the whole gammbit. By the way i had 1 litter a year to support the show line. the crazy stuff that goes on to come up with animals to sell designer breeds ex: spoonerplates- and people if we quit spending money on this crap they will quit reproducing it. everyone upset about this issue needs to contribute something to the SPCA since they are trying clean up after ppl who can't feed their own mouths creating more. We need to promote spay neuter programs and get our heads outta the sand. ME INCLUDED

  • Unfortunatly this story has hit home, my daughter and some of her friends had to go look for their pet that ran out of the house Friday night, they found the dog at the pound on Monday, while waiting for the information, these 17 year old girls were told of the horror of what is done to a pet that is not identified and taken home with their family. My daughter was visibly upset, I do not appreciate nor understand why the girl at the counter had to scare and upset these girls. They were picking up the dog, she was still crying this morning about it because our dog disappeared several weeks ago, we never could locate her. But what really gets me is that someone took it upon herself to tell
3 girls who are not 18 what is done to these animals. Just kind of hits me the wrong way. And then bam there it is on the news. There has to be another solution than to put these pets through so much pain. Maybe they should have a dog sale, like a garage sale. Never know, might actually save a dog and make a little change.

  • I am working to ban the gassing of shelter animals across Texas! I am in the process of sending out open records requests to cities/counties across TX to determine which shelters are using carbon monoxide (gas) chamber. Victoria is 1 of 7 gassing shelters. So far, I have learned 70 cities/counties do NOT gas! I created a website last August to ban the gassing and educate the public. I also have LOTS of contact info on the site. My website is www.STOPgassingtexaspets.com I am a private citizen not with any group. The site is free to visit and I am not paid.

  • Great point N4. I don't see how a needle is more humane than painless, unscented gas that makes the animal fall asleep. BTW- I don't believe any animal should be killed unless it is a harm to others.

  • There is no need for a vet to be present for lethal injection. The City Animal Shelter workers are already trained on this method. All major cities allow their staff to lethally inject once they are trained.

  • Great story and articles! I'm glad the Victoria residents who are concerned about this method are taking the necesary actions needed to let their voices be heard.

  • Southtexas---Well said! You hit all points on the subject. Especially the part of the ugliness and IRRESPONSIBILITY of human beings. I just wish people would learn the words Spay/Neuter when it comes to owning a pet. Unless your some professional breeder there is no excuse not to spay or neuter your pets....I understand this topic is about euthanizing animals but it makes me sick so many animals are put down for the stupidity of their owners rather than an unfortunate illness or risk issue.

  • If people think that gassing animals is inhumane they should be willing to put together a group and raise money to pay for another way of killing these animals. I'm pretty sure that the chemicals involved in these "lethal injections" cost money.

  • With carbon monoxide I thought they just went to sleep. If this method is changed won't some still think that the injection is a bad way. Too bad there are so many that are not wanted.

  • Sorry Mr. Pozzi....there IS a simple answer to this problem. Gassing animals has been deemed inhumane by the vast majority of city/county shelters everywhere. The most humane method must be used to euthanize these animals that are homeless due to the ugliness and irresponsibility of human beings. Can't get any more simple than that.
