CUERO - The DeWitt County Historical Commission will be honored Thursday with the 2009 Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission.

The award recognizes county historical commissions that demonstrate a dedication to several of the group's programs, as well as preservation efforts that lead to a greater understanding of state and local history, according to a news release from the state commission.

Peggy Ledbetter, the county commission's treasurer, said the organization took part in many activities last year including playing an instrumental role in the designation of the James Allen Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery. Allen was the last courier to leave the Alamo hours before it fell in 1826.

Another major project of the DeWitt County Historical Commission is the ongoing establishment of a county archives center.

Ledbetter and county commission chair Patrica Muir Sethness will attend Thursday's Annual Historic Preservation Conference in Houston to accept the award on behalf of the county commission.

DeWitt County will also receive a Historic Restoration Award for the recently completed courthouse restoration.
