I thought it was a great and well-written feature story about a interesting subject, but I agree that the opening sentence was jarring, at best. Of course, from a journalistic standpoint, you are taught to lead with something that will "hook" your reader, and I admit it definitely did catch my attention.
Although not included in the story, Mia said her mother called it a "fiddle hickey." It was not meant as disrespect. It is a term they used themselves.
"Sixteen-year-old Mia Orosco has a hickey on her neck but her parents don't mind." What an insult to call a mark on her neck from playing a muscial instrument a HICKEY. Hickeys are given/received as a sexual marking and this young lady is involved in an activity that is positive and requires great talent. Don't cheapen her accomplishments by trying to write a "cute" word choice.
