The Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners have been announced. Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally-accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.
Receiving National Merit Scholarships in the area are: Jennifer Hsu, Tracy J. Lu, and Brittney C. Xu, all of Port Lavaca and who attend Calhoun High School, received the National Merit Formosa Plastics Corporation, U.S.A. Scholarship. Daniel R. Linden, a home-schooled student of Victoria, received the National Merit Dow Chemical Company Scholarship.

High school students apply through their school when taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, aka the PSAT. If they get a high enough score, they qualify for scholarship awards.
