HALLETTSVILE - As the Lavaca County Courthouse restoration project continues, county residents are invited to have a look at the courthouse annex currently housing most of the county offices.

An open house will be held Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend and tour the facility.

The annex, in the 32,583-square-foot former Godwin grocery store building, will be the permanent home of the Lavaca County Clerk and for the probation department after the courthouse reopens in late summer or early fall.

"After the move of offices to the courthouse, there will be some vacant areas that may be utilized for additional county offices and operations as the commissioners court may decide in the future," said County Judge Ronnie Leck.

Hospice of South Texas and the local Subway restaurant also continue to lease space in the building.

Purchase of the building, front and rear parking lots and building renovations cost the county more than $2 million. It is paid for with county funds and $1.2 million in tax anticipation notes, which are being paid off over seven years.

The building and its contents are insured for more than $4 million.

The courthouse project is about 80 percent complete, said Leck.

The judge commended those working on the courthouse project.

"The Weaver and Jacobs Constructors and team have performed an amazing job of both progressing the job and maintaining the quality of work," Leck said. "TWC Architects of Austin believe this may be one of the more successful and smooth running projects in their experience of nine other courthouse restorations in the THC historical courthouse preservation program."
