GOLIAD - The Presidio La Bahia will be presented with a Historic Texas Lands Plaque on Monday.

The historic landmark will be recognized by the Texas Historical Commission for the preservation of archeological integrity.

Newton Warzecha, director of the Presidio La Bahia, worked to protect and preserve the archeological integrity of the site and helped to document, conserve and curate a vast collection of materials.

Recently, he helped renovate the museum's interior.

The Presidio's significance to Texas history began on Oct. 9, 1835, when a group of Texas citizens captured the fortress from the Mexicans in one of the first offensive actions in the Texas Revolution.

The state commission will present Warzecha the plaque at 12:30 p.m. at the landmark, which is one mile south of Goliad on U.S. Highway 183.
