GOLIAD - Christy Paulsgrove, principal of Goliad Intermediate School, was named the school district's first female superintendent.

Paulsgrove was one of 38 applicants for the position.

"It was a long, fine list of applicants," said Buddy Young, the district's interim superintendent.

Paulsgrove, who began a lengthy education career as a speech therapist, has been with the school district for 31 years, said Young.

"She's the best thing that has happened to the school district," said Jenna Garza, one of Paulsgrove's former students.

The 31-year-educator has worked as a principal in all three schools except for the high school.

"She rose right to the top," said Young.

Former Goliad superintendent Sam Atwood resigned in January to pursue a doctorate degree.

Paulsgrove will officially become superintendent during a special May 4 meeting. She will continue as principal until June.

"She wants to stay with her kids until then," Young said.

Paulsgrove was unavailable for comment.
