PORT O'CONNOR - All that remains of Eva Meitzler's one story wood house is a charred frame and memories.
A fire destroyed her home of 45 years on Saturday afternoon.
About 3:30 p.m., both the Port O'Connor and Port Lavaca fire departments responded to a house fire in the 300 block of North Madison Street.
Meitzler, 77, said she was home taking a nap when she realized the house was on fire.
"I couldn't save anything," said Meitzler.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but Meitzler said firefighters suspected an electrical short.
Meitzler and her 18-year-old grandson Michael Meitzler, who also lived in the house, are staying with relatives until they can find more permanent housing.
Meitzler, who did not have insurance, said she is having a hard time securing a place to live.
"I would like somewhere to live," she said. "I feel like I've lost everything deep in my heart."
Meitzler and her grandson are seeking donations to help get back on their feet.
"If anybody can donate anything, I'd appreciate it. Anything you can do," she said.
