Is the city planning another E-Waste Day where I can recycle my old computer and printer?

Yes. Electronic Waste Day, E-Waste Day, will be on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18, at the Victoria Community Center. This is the ideal way to recycle computers, old cell phones, printers and other electronic waste. E-Waste day is free of charge and open to residents and businesses, but businesses must register online by Sept. 14 at www.victoriatx.org/environmental to participate. Online registration for businesses lets us plan the number of trailers we will need.

E-Waste Day will accept old computers, laptops, televisions, cell phones, monitors, LCD screens, hard drives, servers, printers, cameras, projectors, cables, VCR and DVD players, keyboards, mouse, batteries, communications equipment, routers, switches, MP3 players, speakers and game accessories.

We cannot accept appliances, microwaves, copiers, hazardous waste, lawn equipment or medical equipment at E-Waste Day.

For more information about E-Waste Day, contact our Environmental Services Department at 361-485-3230.

What is the ordinance against loud music?

Section 10-22 of the City Health and Sanitation code states "it shall be unlawful for any person operating or occupying a motor vehicle on a street, highway, alley, parking lot, driveway, whether public or private property, to operate or permit the operation of any sound amplifying device from within the vehicle so that the sound is plainly audible at a distance of 50 or more feet from the vehicle." A sound amplifying device is any radio, tape player, compact disc player, loudspeaker, or other electronic device used for the amplification of sound.

Our police cars are equipped with sound pressure level meters to determine if loud music from a vehicle violates this ordinance.

Do I have to drive downtown to the library to return books and DVDs?

No. The Victoria Public Library has three book drops around the city including a brand new one in the parking lot of the Dr. Pattie Dodson Public health Center, 2805 N. Navarro St.. Book drops are open 24 hours a day for the return of library materials. Other book drops are in the Victoria Mall parking lot at 7800 N. Navarro St. near Red Lobster, and next to the Victoria Public Library on Main Street in downtown Victoria.

Library patrons may drop off their books as well as audio visual materials at the book drops. Please note that audio visual materials including CDs, DVDs, books on CDs and Playaways should be placed in the drop opening designated for audio visual materials. For more information about book drops, call the Victoria Public Library at 361-485-3302 or visit their web site at victoriapubliclibrary.org.

Can I apply for a seat on a city board or commission?

Yes. Most city boards and commissions are staffed by volunteers who want to help improve Victoria. A few boards do require a professional or technical background but for the most part citizens are invited to apply for the board or commission of your choice. It is a good idea to attend a meeting or two of the board or commission first. For an online application, browse to the city web site at www.victoriatx.org and scroll down to the city government section and click on the link to "Boards and Commissions." If you have questions about city boards or commissions, contact the city secretary office at 361-485-3040.

Send your questions and comments for any city department or activity to City of Victoria, Public Information Office, P.O. Box 1758, Victoria, TX 77902, or pio@victoriatx.org.
