  • Here is a suggestion for cutting some expense from the County budget. It may not be much, 50-60K annually, but it would be a start.

    Eliminate the duplication of services.

Victoria College is home to the Victoria Regional History Center. It is also the Regional Historical Resource Depository for Victoria, under the auspices of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Many of Victoria’s county records are housed here because they are of historical significance. This Center is staffed by a professional archivist. This service is provided to Victoria County at no charge.

The Victoria County Archives is a duplication of this service and is funded at County expense. You would think, if there are county records that need to be preserved for the county, those records would be in the care of the County Clerk. They’re not.

Victoria County partially funds a ‘Heritage Director’ to oversee the Victoria County Archives . The other half of the Heritage Director’s salary is funded by Victoria Preservation, Inc., a private non-profit organization. The Victoria County Heritage Director is neither trained as a historian or an archivist.

So, who does the Heritage Director answer to?

More importantly, why is the County funding a service that is already being adequately provided for by Victoria College?

By the way, the Victoria County Archives are housed in the older Bell Telephone Building. Victoria Preservation, Inc. has an office in that building. They do not pay rent to the county for this space.

Oh, the Victoria County Heritage Director, and the Executive Director of Victoria Preservation Inc. are the same person.

I have been trying to figure out exactly what you're talking about. Are you talking about the County Archives? In the smaller (original) Bell Telephone Building?

  • I live in the county raise taxes only enough to give the hourly works 3.5 % pay raise. I don't think this should cost everybody alot of cash. We can't have the county go in the red for a long period. Raise taxes all what I ask is to be fair on the amount.

  • A total new facelift is needed for sure! Can an auditor not see what needs to be cut to make it work? Isn't that their job? I have friends that work for the county that are always out of town and eating good on the county. They pretty much tell me it is b/s getting out of work conferences. Replace them all! Let's start over with pen and paper.

  • Barry,

The reason this county, as with the town, are always short of cash is because of incompetence and poor leadership. Nuff said.

  • Sooner or later taxes are going to have to be raised. It might as well be done before we lose a host of good employees. I would suggest the county do an indepth analysis of how they have been spending and and on what. Why is it this county always seems to be in financial distress? It's time for a new judge and new commissioners. New blood all around!

  • If the county would get rid of the heritiage department it could pay for the airport fixed base improvements.
The heritiage department duplicates what the County Historical Commisssion is supposed to due
