GOLIAD - The Goliad County Library received a $58,000 grant from the M.G. and Lillie A. Johnson Foundation last month.
The grant was approved by the county commissioners court Monday.
Claudine Janota, the library's director, said the money will go toward repairing the leaky roof of the 120-year-old building.
"We're very excited about their generosity," Janota said of the Victoria-based Johnson Foundation. "It's an awesome building. It just needs to be preserved."
Janota estimated the library will need about $150,000 to complete all of its renovation goals, which include repairing the front of the building, painting and replacing carpet.
"We're applying for other grants so we can renovate without affecting taxpayers," Janota said.
The library, which is on the southwest corner of Goliad's downtown square, was constructed as an Appleby's grocery store and was a bowling alley at one time.
It became a historical landmark in 1976 and has served as the county's library since 1991.
Janota said she hopes to start renovating in the fall and finish within six months.
