Theatre Victoria's producing artistic director Charles Moster has announced the premier of an original, all-Texas production, "A Lone Star Night," Aug. 20-22, at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Victoria.

The production, which begins in the glow of a cowboy's campfire, progresses through Texas time to include the poignant memories of a Victoria native, musical sketches from various historical events, one man's rollicking rollercoaster of experiences at his local high school reunion, a portrait of the late Texas icon Candy Barr and a moving homage to the hundreds of victims of femicide in the state of Chihuahua.

"In an effort to provide our audiences with the best of new shows, we are reaching out to local and area artists to participate in these, the first performances of original work by native Texans and Texans-by-choice," Moster explained. "'A Lone Star Night' was designed to give Victorians an opportunity to sample the creativity of local playwrights and composers, bringing a variety of material to the Welder Center, including short comedies, original music and lyrics and dramatic vignettes performed by local and area actors."

In keeping with the theme, the Victoria County Master Gardeners will be exhibiting examples of native Texas plants in the theater's lobby before and after the performances, as well as at intermission, and experts will be on hand to share information about landscaping, using drought-tolerant shrubs and plants, as well as the Master Gardeners upcoming fall plant sale.

"We are extremely pleased with the quality of the comedy, dramatic works and music and lyrics as we highlight Texas talent and believe we're offering entertainment for everyone," said Moster. "And we will be hosting a free reception after the opening night's performance, featuring a Texas theme and an opportunity to visit with the show's creative team."

Featured in the cast of "A Lone Star Night" will be Victor Cavazos, Mary Hall, Josette Looft, Ruth Stock, Johnny Vera and Walter Womack.

Kara Bliss, a well-known singer and performer, of Austin, will be joining the ensemble, along with singer-composer-arranger Adam Donmoyer, well-known for his zany songs and cabaret style. Local singer-songwriter Jerry James will also be featured. Writers whose works are featured in the production are Higinio Emiliano, a drama student at Victoria College, journalist/playwright Alice Adams, of Austin, and Moster, who composed the music and lyrics for the show.
