O.C. Garza, information director for the City of Victoria, was the guest speaker at the July 27 meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Retired Persons Chapter 829. Garza told the group about the plans for major work on Sam Houston Drive, which will begin in November. He also talked about the new city manager, mowing issues because of heavy rains, city water, hurricane emergencies, and the work being done in the downtown area.

Dr. Diaz Deleon, club president, distributed information from the Department of Health and Human Services about Medicare and the new health care law.

Reports were heard from Yvonne Smith and Lois Smith. Members reported 24 hours of volunteer service in the community. The raffle for the day was won by Lois Smith and donated back to the chapter. After the meeting Gayle Harvy served refreshments during the fellowship hour.

The next meeting will be Aug. 31. Barbara Zimmerman, with the Ombudsman program at the golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission Area Agency on Aging will be the speaker.
