Traffic on U.S. Highway 87 near Victoria West High School was jammed at the site of a work convoy after a westbound sport utility vehicle T-boned a northbound truck Wednesday.

No injuries were reported in the accident.

Diedre Hurley, of Victoria, was cited for failure to yield right of way at the stop sign on Nursery Drive and Tropical Drive, said Zachary De La Rosa, senior patrol officer.

After failing to stop, Hurley's SUV struck the white pickup, which caused it to roll, police said. It was about to roll a second time when it crashed into a work convoy truck, making it flip back onto its tires.

Traffic was held up for 30 minutes after the 5:30 p.m. accident. Traffic was diverted onto Nursery Drive as the northbound lanes were blocked off.

"And school hasn't even started," nearby resident Beth Manuel said in reaction to the accident. Manuel said she and her neighbors are concerned traffic accidents may increase with the presence of the new high school.

Manuel added cars tend to drive over the speed limit and do not stop at stop signs on Nursery Drive and Tropical Drive.

"They fly down here," she said. "We've seen them go incredibly fast."

  • Quete: ok, lets try this again, apparently some people don't like to hear the truth. The rocket scientist that decided to build the High School there did not do their homework with only one entrance....it's going to cause some bad accidents with many people getting hurt. I think we should release these scientist and hire someone that has experience in this sort of situation.

From your statements I assume you have given this quite a bit of consideration. What is your solution?

  • What did the school board say?
They said that they didn't need or want any outside input on the placement of the schools. That they were more qualified to make that decision than anybody else.

  • quete...It isn't only West that's messed up. The geniuses are installing traffic lights on the loop at Mockingbird. Sorta defeats the purpose of the loop.
