The Victoria Fire Department plans to be moved into the new fire station at Miori Lane and Sam Houston Drive in December. Construction on the $1.97 million station began in February, with Krueger Construction Co., of Victoria, as the contractor. It will house a fire engine pumper, an ambulance and the hazardous materials response team trailer and equipment.
Five or six firefighters will also be on duty. Fire Chief Vance Riley said workers are putting brick on the outside, the roof is prepared for the metal, and the drives and parking are poured. The station is designed to withstand a Category 4 hurricane, which has sustained winds of 131 to 155 mph.
The station will replace the fire station on Airline Road and provide faster response times to that area of Victoria. The new station will resemble the one on Salem Road, although it will be a little smaller and won't include a training tower.
