Since the University of Houston-Victoria will have freshmen and sophomores on its campus for the first time this fall, are there any plans to welcome them to the university and the community?

UHV is planning many activities Monday through Friday, Sept. 6 through Sept. 10, during Welcome Week to help the underclassmen feel more comfortable at their home away from home.

Community members are invited to several of the events. The new men's and women's soccer teams will hold some of their first home games of the season during the week. At 5 p.m. Tuesday, the community can cheer on the men's team as it plays Huston-Tillotson University at the St. Joseph-O'Connor Athletic Complex, 3006 N. Cameron St. On Thursday, the Jaguars will play Texas Lutheran University, with the women playing at 2 p.m. and the men starting at 4 p.m. For the location for Thursday's games, check the UHV Athletic Department website that day at www.uhvjaguars.com.

The Victoria Chamber of Commerce also will host an event to welcome both UHV and Victoria College students back to school. More than 50 area vendors will have booths set up beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday next to the UHV University Center. Live music will begin at 6 p.m. There is no cost to area business owners who want to set up a booth. For more information, call the chamber at 361-573-5277.

Welcome Week will kick off with what organizers hope will be an annual event for UHV students. Monday's Jaguar Journey will be a special ceremony allowing UHV upperclassmen to welcome the new freshmen and sophomores to the campus. Other events for students scheduled during the week include Victoria Bingo, a Part-Time Job Fair, Party in the Park at Riverside Park, an Information Fair and the UHV Super Bowl at Century Lanes.

The VC/UHV Library also will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday so that students, faculty and staff can see all that the library has to offer. Those who stop by can collect stamps from each of the library's departments and get a free flash drive while they last.

For more information about any of the Welcome Week activities, contact Lindsey Koch, UHV director of student life and services, at 361-570-4136.
