REFUGIO - The city has officially hired a new police chief almost a year after former Refugio Police Chief Chris Brock was indicted on theft charges.
Texas Ranger Andy Lopez was hired last week at the Refugio City Council meeting, and Brock, who was on administrative leave without pay, was terminated, said Mayor Rey Jaso.
"He has a vast knowledge of law enforcement," Jaso said. "He would be good for the town."
Lopez's start date is Oct. 1, and Lopez declined an interview with the Advocate until he officially starts the position.
The council voted unanimously for Lopez, who was a Department of Public Safety Trooper based in Refugio County in the 1980s.
Brock was indicted on allegations of stealing and misusing between $20,000 - $100,000 from a police forfeiture account in September.
Detective Fernando Garcia served as the acting police chief, but resigned shortly after his interim position, Jaso said.
The city looks forward to working with Lopez, he added.
"We've just been waiting all this time," he said.
A trial date for Brock has not been set but District Attorney Michael Sheppard said it may be set during the beginning of 2011.
