A metal trailer sat naked, illuminated by a piercing, white light with its cardboard sleigh wall cutouts attached to one of its sides and a box of readied supplies next to it Thursday night.

"This is top secret," said Chyanne Lakey, who couldn't wait for her and other members of her organization, Crossroads Pet Rescue, to begin preparing two floats for Saturday night's holiday lighted parade.

The nonprofit is one of 120 entries in the parade slaving to make their float idea into a reality.

This will be the first time the organization parades down North Street, as they have only been an official group for about a year, Lakey said.

Lakey wasn't ready to reveal their prized idea, but it does involve a very large dog, several smaller dogs, lights, snow and a message.

"We want to stand out to Victoria and the community," she said. "Blood, sweat and tears. I have a feeling that's what it's going to come down to."

Crossroads Pet Rescue began when she and a friend went to visit a pound and saw the number of dogs and cats without homes.

When she went later the next day, some of those animals were gone.

And they weren't adopted.

"We give these pets a second chance at life - this is what we do," she said.

Members of the group work in taking the animals in.

While fostering them, they will rehabilitate, house train and pay for the administration of shots and the cost of spaying and neutering, she added.

Adoption prices vary, but they are at a low cost.

The organization also gears their adoption efforts toward low-income families and the elderly.

Lakey's daughter, Kayla Lakey, 13, works with grooming the dogs.

"I'm going to be an animal groomer when I grow up," the Cade Middle School student said.

Kayla is inspired by her mother, who works with the grooming and hygiene of animals at Northside Pampered Pets.

The nonprofit has been trying to get the organization's name out there through various fundraiser events, such as a recent dog wash, where they bathed other people's animals, said Julie Flores, the organization's secretary.

Flores has her own pets and isn't fostering any at the moment, but several of the groups members and volunteers are.

"We're going to do that until we can raise enough money to get a facility," she said, smiling hopefully.

Local businesses, like Victory, have helped the organization. The car dealership donated a truck to help finish their float idea.

More people began to pour in to get ready to prepare the float.

Their efforts will go well into Friday and Saturday, Lakey said.

"We're the new kids on the block," Lakey said. "They're all pumped up and ready to work this trailer. We're wanting to get out their with our first float."
