thinksalot- Sounds like those that are complaining are the ones that want something for nothing and did not get it! Victoria- Stop complaining and do something about the problem. Vote for KyleC! lol
Thanks to the VicAd correction, we now know that the community center properties cost $31,000 a month to maintain, that is one heck of a expense.... $372,000 a year. Just think if the city payed property taxes on the land!
You complain when the streets are mess, but you complain when we're taxed to fix them. You complain about limited entertainment options in this city, but you complain when the city finds creative ways to encourage recreation options. You complain about weeds and trash, and then you complain about the Parks Department budget. You complain about city leadership, but you express your concerns behind an anonymous post.
I know who you are... you're just like me.
Did anyone bother to try and find out an answer to whether or not the figures were correct, or are we just going to go down the same old road of bitching and moaning about this and that without actually trying to find out the truth?
Well, I did. Turns out that Mr. Reyna's figures were not reported correctly. The $83,000 is the budgeted revenue generated by the tax divided by 12. Not a monthly cost of operation for the CC. The figure was mentioned as a way of coming up with an amount to use for the reserve fund.
if those numbers are correct, the city either needs to close down the CC asap or get rid of it this month
the ignorance in local govt is mind numbing
@N45BA, were you meaning to say the Victoria Convention and Visitors Bureau rather than VEDC?
I'll buy it - I have this great idea for a boot fetishists cult and I need a place of worship.
If this is correct, then the CC is costing about 2700/day. That is surely more than it generates in rental fees.
I suggest the city sell this liability to some private individual dirt cheap and cut their losses. It would free up the money to support those non-profit activities that do draw some folks to Victoria. And this time, the building would already come with a parking lot--no need to offer one later...
@EdithAnn, wow, that struck me too. That is roughly a million a year in "just keeping it in business." It seems rather high, why is it costing so much for upkeep?
Please tell me this is a typo:
"Gilbert P. Reyna Jr., the city's finance director, has said it costs about $83,000 to $85,000 a month just to keep the community center in business."
Just what exactly is costing this much money?
Oh WOW !!! We got money. As politicians lets figure out a way to spend it real quick !!
