We keep hearing how the Texas Zoo is doing great things. We can point to the zoo's new director, Andrea Blomberg, and its board of directors, who chose to hire Blomberg for her business savvy, not her zoo knowledge. That decision obviously paid off.

Blomberg inherited a zoo with problems when she took the job of director. The zoo had lost its accreditation in March because of being in financial arrears, its aging exhibits and a too frequent turnover in directors and board members. Blomberg is the zoo's fifth director.

Now, we see exhibits being reorganized and some new ones being constructed. We see that the zoo organization, since it sold 76 acres of donated property, is in good fiscal shape and most importantly, we see a stability that the Texas Zoo hasn't had in quite some time.

We were excited to see a new lemur exhibit that will house tamarins, as well. And there will be a new spider monkey exhibit, too.

The zoo education building is being expanded from 396 square feet to 796 square feet with an additional set of restrooms. And there's grouping resident animals by species taking place, too.

We could go on with plans to redo the zoo because there is a lot more. But we think the bottom line to all this updating, new construction and reorganizing is a good chance at winning back the zoo's Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation. That certification means an official networking with other zoos and all the advantages that go with that distinction, including the opportunity to acquire more animals.

We can all help the zoo by volunteering services. We understand volunteers are needed to do carpentry and manual labor.

Again, we praise the zoo and its staff and administrators for the good work accomplish, and we are excited about the zoo's future. Keep up the good work.
