For Brenda Joy Brooks of Victoria, few things are as horrible as seeing women downtrodden and beaten up by life. It bothers her so much that she felt compelled to help, she said, and as a result recently self-published her first book, "Coming Out of Egypt: A Road Map to the New Me I Always Wanted to Be."
"I just felt I could speak into their lives and let them know they have value, that there is a God that loves them," the longtime Faith Family Church member said. "They have purpose, and I figured what better way to reach out to them and let them know that than to put it on paper."
Published by Xulon Press, a self-publication company dedicated to Christian books, "Coming Out of Egypt" combines self-help and style tips with teachings from the Bible, Brooks said.
"My book is a message to set women free to be all God created them to be as his beautiful, wonderful and highly treasured daughters," she added. "This is a word for such a time as this. Women are running to and fro to complete the task set before them. They feel overwhelmed and defeated. They need to know there is hope, and they are part of a big plan."
A grandmother with a background in cosmetology and education, both secular and Christian, Brooks will have a book signing at the Bible Book Store in Victoria from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Jan. 29.
