Victoria Police Senior Patrol Officer Herschel Buck views the impact made in the windshield of a white Buick LeSabre that fatally struck an elderly man crossing Laurent Street on Friday evening.

An elderly man died when he was hit by a vehicle about 7 p.m. Friday night.

A woman driving a white Buick LeSabre south on the inside lane of Laurent Street hit the man, pronounced dead on arrival at an area hospital, said Senior Patrol Officer Herschel Buck.

The accident happened near the intersection of Laurent and Elizabeth Street, across from Patti Welder Stadium.

Officers had not identified the man and would not provide the driver's name because the investigation is ongoing, Buck said.

Buck expected to be at the scene for several hours, talking to the driver and witnesses.

Steve Williams was driving north on Laurent Street when he saw the man walk east across the street.

"It was like a shadow," he said, staring at the slip-on shoe and red and white trucker cap littered around the woman's car.

The man was looking down and appeared to be stumbling, he said.

Williams did not see the man get hit, he said.

Williams saw a vehicle on the outside lane almost hit the man, so he thinks the driver that did hit him may have not had enough time to see or even react, he said.
