A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper seized about $500,000 worth of marijuana during a traffic stop on Thursday morning.
About 7:40 a.m., a tan, 2006 Dodge Durango that was pulling a 2000 21-foot Champion boat, was traveling on U.S. Highway 59 near Hanselman Road.
A trooper pulled over the sport utility vehicle on suspicion of having an obstructed license plate.
While talking to the SUV's driver, Sugar Land resident Esteban Hernandez, the trooper noticed details of Hernandez's story were not adding up, said DPS Public Information Officer Gerald Bryant.
Hernandez, 23, consented to a search of the boat.
During the search, Bryant said the trooper discovered 31 bundles of marijuana, which equaled 483 pounds, in the hole underneath the boat's console.
Hernandez was charged with possession of marijuana between 50 and 2,000 pounds, a second-degree felony.
He is in custody at the Victoria County jail.
