Advocate editorial board opinion: What will we remember that started in 2010?

Every high school football season in the Crossroads includes its share of highs and lows.

But for those paying any attention at all, it was obvious this season was special.

More than anything else, the city of Victoria was fixated on East vs. West.

Fans enjoyed every "first" achieved throughout the year, but it was clear many were waiting for the Nov. 5 match-up between the two schools, as more than 10,000 people filled Memorial Stadium, the former home of just one football team.

Though there have been arguments here and there, they've mostly been good-natured.

And beyond that, it seems the city has embraced both teams and the rivalry that comes with it.

And though neither came very close to a state championship, both finished ahead of where they were projected at the beginning of the year.

After years of mediocre finishes, the town's football fans were re-energized by winning programs.

We certainly can't overlook the accomplishments of other teams from the area, including Shiner St. Paul, Refugio, Schulenburg and others that played deep into the playoffs, but 2010 should be remembered as the beginning of a new era for Victoria football.
