NON-DISTRICT SCHEDULES
Victoria East: Harlingen South, Kingsville, Corpus Christi Calallen, Corpus Christi King, San Antonio East Central
Victoria West: San Antonio Brackenridge, Corpus Christi King, Bay City, San Antonio Harlandale, South San Antonio
Realignment around the area, see Page C1.
Ralph Escalona's mood brightened considerably after wading through the mass of humanity at the Region III Education Service Center on Monday morning and picking up his University Interscholastic League packet.
Escalona heard a number of scenarios about where Victoria's two new high schools could end up in the UIL's biennial reclassification and realignment since becoming the district's athletic director in January.
But reality proved better than speculation for Victoria East and Victoria West.
When the two new high schools replace Memorial in the upcoming school year, they will compete in District 30-4A against Calhoun, Beeville, Gregory-Portland and Floresville.
"I kind of figured we might pick up Beeville and lose Calhoun, but it worked out almost exactly the way we wanted," Escalona said. "I think it's going to be a good thing for us."
Escalona was pleased about the competitive nature of the district and its proximity to Victoria. The Warriors and Titans will travel less than 100 miles for their district games.
"The travel's real manageable compared to what we're used to San Antonio and Corpus Christi," Escalona said. "I think it's going to be a real good deal for Victoria."
Memorial head football coach Mickey Finley, who is expected to become the head football coach at East, was pleasantly surprised with the destination of the Victoria schools.
"It's really better than we could have ever hoped for," Finley said. "We were thinking we could go all San Antonio or all Corpus Christi and this is really closer. This ought to be a great district. There are some good football teams in there."
The realignment also pleased Calhoun athletic director and head football coach Richard Whitaker, who is looking forward to re-establishing a rivalry with the Victoria schools.
"It's a new challenge," Whitaker said. "It's always exciting to realign and go into a new district. I know Victoria's excited about its two schools and I think it's a good little district."
The district's athletic directors will meet in Victoria on Tuesday to determine a schedule.
But Escalona and Finley were able to put together non-district schedules for East and West.
East is scheduled to play Harlingen South, Kingsville, Corpus Christi Calallen, Corpus Christi King and San Antonio East Central.
West is scheduled to play San Antonio Brackenridge, Corpus Christi King, Bay City, San Antonio Highlands and South San Antonio.
Escalona is hoping East and West can play their first game at Memorial Stadium with East opening on Zero Week and West on Week 1.
"I'm very happy," Escalona said. "I think with the kids that we have this year, when we split, we're going to be real competitive no matter where we go or no matter which district we wound up in."

Does anyone have a non-district schedule for Refugio yet, thanks.
February 5, 2010 at 2:33 p.m.When it comes to reality, you fail. You are a pile of redundancy, repeating the same thing over and over and over again. We'll see what happens on the field. We'll see which teams go further. At least now, since you segregated again, Victoria will get two chances.
February 4, 2010 at 10:58 a.m.I'm just keeping it real. I know we aren't the greatest team. Hell, we don't even know what we are getting with these 2 new teams. Everything is new.
But when CHS (not Cuero) people wanna run their mouth like they're unbeatable, I'm gonna be here to bring them back down to reality.
February 4, 2010 at 10:40 a.m.How funny that Calhoun has 4 pretty good seasons in a row after 40+ years of nothing and all of a sudden they have the "best fans in the area"....Um, no...that title belongs to CUERO. It's funny that CHS people think they are the best program in the area but they forget about little ole Cuero down the road. I'm gonna laugh when Cuero steamrolls the Crabs this year. They aren't 3A Needville, who yall failed to beat in 06 and 07.
You can't even compare 5A to 4A success. We played teams like SA Madison,Judson,SA MacArthur,SA Oconnor,SA Clark in the first rounds....who does Calhoun get? Uvalde lol...then Mercedes. It's apple to oranges. You really think Calhoun could have gotten past SA Clark in bi district?
You never hear Cuero fans running their mouth because when you're good you don't have to. The talking gets done on the field.
Memorial may have not made the playoffs last year but OJ Hughes and Co. would have rolled by Calhoun no doubt. Too bad we had to play teams like Judson and Wagner in district. We lost to Wagner by 7 and Judson by 10. Calhoun loses by 14 to a 3-7 Beeville lol
February 4, 2010 at 10:36 a.m.Once again, how many playoff victories does Victoria have in the past few years? Against anybody? How many State titles...... ever? You could argue the same thing about victoria in the 90's. They would beat all those Corpus teams and then lose in the first or second round. You can only beat the teams that are on the field with you. Why are you so obsessed with Lake Travis? Feel free to move there if you want. Calhoun takes the kids they have, gets the most out of them and have consistently won over the last few seasons. They have the Greatest fans in the area.I think victoria is just a bit jealous. And victoria understandably has to be a little tired of being one of the worst teams in the area, year after year.
February 4, 2010 at 9:52 a.m.Hey Mexirican, I hear that Lake Travis has a chance of going Division 2 this coming season based on their new district enrollment numbers...you want some of them apples? They are no Houston Sharpstown, Mercedes,Uvalde or GP. LOL You'll be playing a real team. They killed Flour Bluff in the playoffs last year and they would have done the same to Calhoun, but Calhoun got the easy bracket and now they think they are ELITE. LMAO!
Actually, yall have a good program going. Not a dynasty. Not an elite team. You are beatable. Hell, inner city HISD Sharpstown beat you guys last year. Then a 3-7 Beeville team who finished near the bottom of the district beat you guys.
Stop trying to act like you're better than you are because you beat a bunch of no body teams...wow, you beat Miller,Moody,Ray,Rockport,Mercedes,Uvalde!
Top 4A programs can compete with the top 5A programs. Longview who was 4A last year beat Allen. Lake Travis could tango with Katy and it would be good. Calhoun and Katy? ROTFLMAO!
February 4, 2010 at 9:29 a.m.If our team was "just ok" how would you describe Victorias team?
February 4, 2010 at 4:42 a.m.http://prepsports.caller.com/football...
We played 4 more games after your season ended

February 4, 2010 at 12:12 a.m.Victoria Memorial couldn't make it to the playoffs as one team, how do they think they can divide the talent in half and expect to be any better. Is west going to gerrymander kids in from the "other" part of town like Victoria High did? Are they doing any off season work now? Learning their coach's system? The Crabs have been running the same system for the past 6 years, they have the best Powerlifting program in the area, maybe State. They are being told about what Victoria did in the past, running up the score and playing with little class. And with all those winning seasons in the 80's and 90's, How many state champions does Victoria have? ........... None...... Zip........ Zilch. Calhoun has at least played in the big game. Hell Palacios won one. Victoria has always been home that weekend.
February 3, 2010 at 10:56 p.m.Those interested... Kerrville Tivy non-district schedule:
Fredericksburg
SA Madison
Steele
Lake Travis
Found this amazing scanning the states match ups. 3 of the 4 are good. Open up with a cake walk.
February 3, 2010 at 9:14 a.m.Madison & MacArthur in SA have the M&M Bowl.
February 2, 2010 at 11:25 p.m.WestSideMamma-Please define excellence. Besides our drill team or band, please name one thing that victoria public schools have won since consolidation. Oh yes I forgot, one school had a gold stripe with the other school has a silver stripe. My bad.
February 2, 2010 at 11:13 p.m.How about "The Protective Cup" series for all the athletic supporters out there?
February 2, 2010 at 10:32 p.m.Loop 463 Cup; bowl
February 2, 2010 at 10:18 p.m.crossroads cup
Victoria Bowl
Matt, we need to get some kind of trophy for the East vs West rivalry. Judson and Wagner play for something I think called the "hammer" Battle of the Hammer!
The school who wins keeps the trophy or whatever it is until the following year.
February 2, 2010 at 9:56 p.m.To jwkramer79: It's not about the names or the school colors (which are not the same and were voted on by the students who would be attending each school). It's ALL about Academic and Athletic excellence!
February 2, 2010 at 8:30 p.m.Johnny,
The Crabs have been bringing it for the past several years huh? Did they bring it against Houston Sharpstown(inner city HISD) and a 3-7 Beeville team last season? Did they bring it to 3A Needville in 06 and 07? And you think you can beat Cuero? LOL. Cuero is going to roll all over those Crabs. Last season Cuero rolled past Beeville 34-10, the same Beeville team that beat CHS 35-21.
I respect Calhoun but please don't try and act like you all are Lake Travis or Dallas Highland Park. Everyone with a little football knowledge knows the only reason Calhoun got to the 4th round of the playoffs was because they were in Division 2 and beat those "powerhouse" teams in Mercedes, Uvalde, and Austin McCallum to get there. Meanwhile, Lake Travis, Alamo Heights and Steele are all Division 1.
I hope the Calhoun players take us as lightly as some of their fans LOL
February 2, 2010 at 8:17 p.m.T-Light Shower...or, whatever. Again, please bring something worthwhile to the field. Unlike what we saw this previous year with the scary 5A schools. The Crabs have been bringing it for the past several years.
February 2, 2010 at 7:32 p.m.I don't know what Escalona is so happy about. The Vipers weren't exactly tearing it up in 5A. I don't see how he thinks that 2 NEW schools will be able to be compete in the new district. The school board has dropped the ball from day one in regards to giving the community what they want. I don't know of a single person that was for consolidation before the Vipers and I don't know of anybody that wanted the new schools to be named East or West. That is just our wonderful school board doing things as they see fit since we(the public) don't understand or know what we want. And who voted on having 2 schools with the same colors? That sure took a lot of thought. I guess I am done ranting for now. To all you good folks out there.....good night.
February 2, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.Yes, we here in Crab Nation will be ready. See...your flawed response in "I will be ready" showes your achilles heel.
February 2, 2010 at 5:06 p.m.Crabs STAY ready!!
I'm always fired up...are you ready? Because I will be....
February 2, 2010 at 3:56 p.m.Eaaaasy Red Rage!! You're getting fired up before gear is even handed out!
February 2, 2010 at 3:13 p.m.Calhoun may not have won a district title outright, but the Vipers did real well losing to all those BIG BAD 5A SCHOOLS...so Calhoun should consider that, huh?
And now, Victoria is halving that team which did so well against the 5A schools? So the two new teams will be twice as...good?
I was talking about basketball, Even though Victoria wins the games there is obvious reasons. As for football, Calhoun is going to win district.
February 2, 2010 at 10:20 a.m.Willthrill,
West will have the cheating refs...duh! I thought you knew!
Calhoun, no one is scared of you. We are used to playing teams like Converse Judson, SA Wagner, SA O'Connor, SA Taft, Cy-Fair, Pearland, SA Marshall, SA Clark, and many other big 5As, and you think we're gonna be scared of Calhoun? Please.
Yall should worry about getting past Flour Bluff and Cuero...those are going to be laughable. We'll see how tough the crabs are after those. Bluff and Cuero are no Houston Sharpstown. lol
We respect our opponent but we aren't scared. Bank on that! Man, the way these crab fans talk you'd think they won the last 3 state titles...wait, that's Lake Travis!
February 2, 2010 at 10 a.m.@willthrill
February 2, 2010 at 9:33 a.m.The refs will likely be from neutral ground. I'm happy to see that the Victoria teams will be in yalls district we can settle whose better once and for all. But I have a feeling when BOTH Victoria teams run all over yall the excuses will be flying(The refs where cheating for Victoria).
I just have one question, Which victoria team will the refs cheat for? Something to think about. goodluck sandcrabs
February 2, 2010 at 9:11 a.m.OneCrabbyLady, we're not scared. Yall are a good program (now) but you're not unbeatable. Yall have yet to win an undefeated district title. I'm sure our new programs will try and ruin that again like Beeville did last season. Bring it!
February 2, 2010 at 8:24 a.m.WoooHooo! Hey Rage looks like it is going to be a fun season in the fall...and VicAd comments will be poppin with these old rivals kicking it back up. I think Victoria Alumni will be surprised to find that football play from Crab Nation is (pardon the pun) a whole new ballgame!
Let's Go Sandcrabs...your "Nation" is ready.
