HELP TO MAP EXITS
Phone the Life Safety Division of the Victoria Fire Department at 361-485-3460.
We praise the Victoria Fire Department for its professionalism, quick response and respect for property that is endangered by fire.
Wednesday was a busy day; we know of three fires the department responded to. One of those fires was across the street from the Victoria Advocate offices. That fire involved a towel catching on fire from a wall-heating unit that was left on.
We urge residents to be especially careful when it is cold and space heaters and wall heaters are turned on. Luckily, in the case of this nearby fire, no one was hurt.
Firefighters arrived promptly, cordoned off the intersection at DeLeon and Constitution streets and calmly and swiftly extinguished the fire.
No damage was caused by firefighters. In fact, they made an effort to preserve property - no use of axes or full blasts of water. Only the fire caused damage.
Two other fires Victoria firefighters dealt with Wednesday morning were at a mobile home on Leary Lane and a two-story apartment on Oaklawn Street.
We know the fire department, if asked, will come to businesses, and advise on how to map out the building for exits and provide suggestions for the best avenues to leave the building. The department did it for the Advocate.
We must also mention the fire department's response to the airport Tuesday, when a pilot flying a Cessna 210 experienced electrical failure. The situation seemed grim for a while, but the fire department responded professionally and was ready for any twist in the airplane's flight.
Ron Pray, Victoria County fire marshal, noted that emergency personnel, including the Victoria Fire Department, had practiced for such a crisis last year.
"They worked hand-in-hand on this situation and everything went great," Pray said.
As it turned out, the pilot was able to use his cell phone for navigation. And his plane's electrical system began working again. He landed safely.
Again, we praise our firefighers. They certainly deserve all of our praise.
This editorial reflects the views of the Victoria Advocate's editorial board.

February 7, 2010 at 1:37 p.m.There are several ways that you can find out when we are under a burn ban.
· All major roads into the county have signs that are changed by the volunteer FD in that area that indicates when there is a burn ban.
· You can call the County Fire Marshal office at 579-9103. The recording will tell you when there is a ban if nobody is there to answer the phone.
· Call the non-emergency number at 911 center (573-3221) and they can tell you also.
These two numbers are the ones that people should call every time that they have a control burn in Victoria County. A good number of fire calls that send units from the city and the Volunteer departments could be avoided if everyone would call first before they burn. This puts peoples lives at an unnecessary risk every time a call goes out.
I live in the country and it is not easy to know if a burn ban is in effect or not. Where can I easily find the information on the internet? Or maybe the Vic Ad could put and Icon on the front page. A little flame in a circle with a diagonal line through it. Just a thought. I am trying to prevent a fire!
