It was a tough day for 14-year-old Kace Gandee Tuesday. He had to sit through an entire day of school knowing that when the last bell rang, he would be handed the keys to a brand spanking new, custom-modified, Dodge Challenger.
"I'm in shock. I still can't believe I won and it's real," the St. Joseph High School student said.
Kace was the grand prize winner in the Cartoon Network's "Kevin's Car Giveaway," beating out more than 200,000 other hopefuls who all called the same toll-free number on Nov. 25.
As the winner, he received a 2010 tricked out Dodge Challenger stunt vehicle that one of the main characters drives in the network's original live-action movie "Ben 10: Alien Swarm."
The movie was based on the network's popular animated series "Ben 10: Alien Force," according to a network news release.
The vehicle was personally delivered to Kace at school by a Cartoon Network representative Tuesday afternoon. He also received a check to help cover state and federal taxes associated with winning the car, according to the news release.
"I'm sure his whole day at school was wasted today," Kace's mother, Tina Reeves, laughed.
As the last bell rang, a huge crowd of students and faculty gathered around the car as everyone waited for Kace to come out of the building. Upon being handed the keys, Kace promptly got in the driver's seat and revved the engine to the sound of cheers.
"When I first found out I won, I didn't believe it. I was freaking out. I never win," he said. "I've been a big fan of the show ever since it first came out a couple years ago."
While Kace and his mother were ecstatic when they found out he was the lucky caller, Kace's step-dad was a bit more skeptical.
"It was only yesterday, when I first saw the car that I actually believed he won it," David Reeves said. "It's a cool car."
Now all Kace has to do is ... well, wait. He won't be eligible for his learning permit until July.
"He was excited about getting his driver's license before, but now he's chomping at the bit," his step-dad said. "Guess we'll just have his mom drive him around in it for now. Maybe give out some rides. Five dollars a mile."

We saw this contest going on only because my son was so excited to watch the new Ben 10 movie. He thought the car was cool, but he also thought the movie was cooler so we didn't even bother entering. We even said "I bet no one ever really wins these things"......darn! Congratulations kid!

I don't know....I think I've read more stories in the Advocate involving OLD PEOPLE driving their cars into office buildings.
January 6, 2010 at 8:18 a.m.Thanks, dad!
I like your comment about giving rides for $5.00/mile--that will probably just about cover the insurance and gas, right? :)
Good job, Kace!
January 5, 2010 at 9 p.m.Not in the driver's seat, but close enough I guess. Picture of the winner and prize set as profile picture. Not sure how else to share it here. Hope it works.
January 5, 2010 at 8:31 p.m.You had to watch KAVU for that.
January 5, 2010 at 7:01 p.m.It is indeed a cool car. They trailered it to Victoria, and I passed them at the loop on 87. I was wondering what the deal was. Lucky kid!
(Be smart when you do get to drive Kase, your friends are already impressed!)
