Editor, the Advocate:

Currently, here in Memorial High School, there is a new rule against tattoos being visible during the school hours; therefore, these tattoos cause our students to cover these "distractions" with long sleeves.

It's absurd how they force this upon students because not only is it not a distraction when they are visible, but they make it a dramatic manner when they give no other option than to cave in to their rules.

The school board shouldn't make such a big deal about this because at least these students are attending school. Now that the situation is causing problems, some of these students are considering dropping out of school.

The school board and administration need to reconsider what they are doing with this tactic and decide whether it's worth so much trouble.

  • Having a tattoo should not prevent a student from learning. When a student marks his/her body, they should be willing to take the consequences of having a tattoo. Most employers will ask that you cover your tattoo and it isn't that much different if the school is asking you to cover it. You wanted the tattoo, so act responsibly and cover it up while in school or work. Grow up. And by the way, I have a tattoo and I cover it for work and it doesn't bother me in any way to cover it up. That is part of being a grown up.

  • "You are probably a student, so I am going to be nice...Tell the people that want to leave for this reason to go quickly. The teachers will appreciate the fact that they no longer have to waste their time dealing with them. Tell the parents of the people who thought it was a good idea to get a tattto, to wake up and smell the coffee."

Well said. Not much more to add to that.

I'm sure these kids would grow up to be rocket scientists and doctors otherwise... Flip my burger kid, you've got 5 kids to feed.

  • This is Victoria's problem... Wasting so much time and effort on something so meaningless as a tat...

  • The rule isn't "new". There was a rule against it back when I was in school. I guess they haven't been enforcing it lately.

  • If covering a tattoo is all it takes for a kid to drop out of school, what will these kids do when it is time to get a JOB and got to WORK?
Will these kids quit a JOB because they have to get up before NOON to go to WORK?

  • Suzy..."If that is all it takes to get kids to think about wanting to drop out of school, they really aren't there to learn anyway. It really would be better for those kids to leave school."

I've gotta agree with you here, Suzy. If I owned a business or was a manager in a company with responsiblilty to hire employees, I'd never hire anyone with a tattoo that showed when dressed for work. It may be small minded and old fashioned, but it's a personal thing. I see tattoos, I think prison thug -- especially those that cover the arms.

  • Ex, No I do not,but I do feel that they get a bad rap. I would ride with that brotherhood anytime. The point I was making is that people are quick to judge just solely on appearance.BTW I am not a RUB, I live the lifestyle.

  • I agree with school board. Tatoos should not be seen during school hours. Many people have tatoos where they can be been. There is a reason for that. Go apply for a good paying job with tatoos in plain site. See if you get it, I more and likey not that person. You can call what you like, just being honest. The kids have to learn the real world sooner or later.

  • I have tatoos, but you would not know it unless I wanted you to. I work in sales and think that I would lose out if customers see my tats. The schools should teach a dress code and they should be backed by the parents. This could mean the difference in that student getting a job digging ditches or managing a company. I support individuality, but in the real world it is called stereotyping. I ride a Harley, but that doesn't mean I'm with the Hell's Angels.

  • I agree no tatoos showing. Just remember, when you are old, and skin starts to sag, and it will, the tattos will be really ugly.Won't look like a tatoo, will look like some kid scribbled on your body.

  • If that is all it takes to get kids to think about wanting to drop out of school, they really aren't there to learn anyway. It really would be better for those kids to leave school. "They" are being a distracion to the kids that stay in school because they want to learn and make something out of themselves.

  • Myself I show support for the Victoria school district on this matter. Tattoos should not be visible on a school campus. Should be covered up. When they get out of school and go apply for a job. You will have to cover your tattoos while on the job if you work in the public. To me its called respect. Just like long hair along with other school issues thats been going on for a very long time. So thumbs up for V.I.S.D. And if you ask me, if students cant respect school rules and policies, they need to learn by it, by possible going to boot camp or ect.
