Ralph Escalona is expected to become the new athletic director for the Victoria school district.

The Advocate has learned superintendent Bob Moore plans to recommend Escalona at Thursday’s special board of trustees meeting.

Attempts to reach Escalona for comment on Thursday afternoon were unsuccessful, but others with knowledge of the process confirmed Escalona would be recommended for the position.

Escalona is currently the Victoria school district’s assistant athletic director. He graduated from Stroman and was previously the head baseball coach at Stroman and Memorial.

The athletic director’s position came open when Memorial head football coach Mickey Finley announced he would resign to continue coaching next season.

Memorial will be replaced by Victoria East and Victoria West high schools in the upcoming school year, and Finley has requested to become the head football coach at East.

The school district received 17 applicants for the athletic director’s position and Escalona was one of five candidates interviewed by a committee of administrators.

The other candidates interviewed were Memorial boys head basketball coach John Grammer, Stroman campus assistant principal Abbie Barnett, Hallettsville assistant coach and former Memorial offensive coordinator Kyle Taylor, and Brazosport school district athletic director and former Yoakum athletic director and head football coach Jessie Crow.

  • Jack - This has nothing to do with The Advocate or KAVU getting a scoop. It has everything to do with the probability that the "source" was someone who was responsible for interviewing the candidates (employee of the school district), someone in the Human Resource office, or Mr. Moore. IMO this person or persons should be fired! I also think that Julian Cavazos should investigate the hiring policies and practices for Victoria ISD. I can't imagine that this is the first time that there have been leaks made by school district personnel. Is this an example of the "good old boy" network in the school district that other posters are always talking about? By the way, I have never questioned the Advocates ability to "dig up news" as you stated.

  • You can remove "likely" from this header.
TheSchool Board in a show of soliditary votes 6-0 to follow the wishes of the good old boy network.

VISD taxpayers are spending several million dollars to get new schools with the same cast of characters to run them.
Now we await the word on new West Coach.

  • The people of Victoria just need to realize that the good old boy network owns the VISD.
Mr Moore is untouchable, his partner Coach Finley is untouchable. The School Board members are spineless to stand up to a man who in theory works for them & the people of Victoria.
Some much for a fresh start. I just wish I was suprised a tiny bit.

  • Well, I guess this is a good time for people to see if the board is a puppet of the superintendent...who was in on the interview process???surely, you have that knowledge too>>>

  • That is the only way to assure everyone involved that Finley can have a seat at his high school of choice

  • Please do not confuse my anger with the "likely" choice of AD. I am just confused as to how this could leak out unless done intentionally. I can't imagine that the board members will appreciate it very much. Wouldn't it be sad if the person who has been chosen didn't get the job because of something untoward like this LEAK! Off with their heads!

  • I just checked and, according to the school district website, Eloy Chapa (788-9227) is the Director of Human Resources. The following people also work in this department: Elaine Mize, Human Resources Data Analyst, 788-9224; Lynne Vasquez, Human Resources Secretary / Professional Services, 788-9227; Yvonne Frederick, Paraprofessional Services, 788-9251; Ida Jimenez, Substitute Coordinator, 788-9230; Sharon Hardin, Office Clerk, 788-9228; Demetria Brown, Auxiliary Services, 788-9299; and Gail Proctor, Employee Benefits Coordinator, 788-9229; Michelle Tesch, Employee Benefits Secretary (Worker's, Un-employment Compensation), 788-9334.

Mike Foreman - you seem to have some great sources which I am sure you are not at liberty to reveal. However, you might be able to tell us who interviewed these AD candidates. The source or sources of your "likely" information can only be one of the people listed above, someone who interviewed the candidates, or Mr. Moore himself. Whoever it is needs to lose their job TODAY if Ralph Escalona is named AD. If it is someone else, then either one of these people is giving you the run around or you have bad sources.
I am outraged that this information came out before 5:00 today when the board meeting doesn't start until 6:00.

  • Jessie Crow would be good. He turned Yoakum's program around when he was there. I don't know why he left Yoakum though.

  • I find it very interesting that this announcement of the "likely" new AD has already been announced before the board meeting has even begun. The
source(s) of this information (described as others with knowledge of the process) can only be school district personnel and should be fired immediately!
