Ralph Escalona is hoping to have the football and volleyball coaches for Victoria East and West in place before the end of the month.
Escalona will spend his first day as the Victoria school district's athletic director meeting with Superintendent Bob Moore and personnel director Eloy Chapa to expedite the process of hiring coaches for the new high schools, which open in August.
"We've got to take care of that right away," Escalona said. "We'll get busy going through resumes trying to find the best candidate for the position."
Escalona's hiring was approved by a 6-0 vote of the school board after a brief executive session at a special meeting on Thursday night.
Moore said Escalona, 41, who has been the school district's assistant athletic director since 2007, will receive a one-year contract with a salary ranging from $75,000 to $85,000.
The school district received 17 applications for the position and a committee of administrators interviewed five candidates before Moore recommended Escalona.
The other candidates interviewed were Memorial boys head basketball coach John Grammer, Stroman campus assistant principal Abbie Barnett, Hallettsville assistant coach and former Memorial offensive coordinator Kyle Taylor, and Brazosport school district athletic director and former Yoakum athletic director and head football coach Jessie Crow.
"I want to make sure we have the best and I think Ralph pretty easily came to the top," Moore said. "I think a real advantage is he understands Victoria. He understands the kids. He's from Victoria and he's had so many years of experience.
"The last four years, I've observed him very closely. His visibility, his presence, his involvement with parents and his relationships with principals and other staff and he's very strong in all those other areas."
Escalona played on Stroman's 1985 state championship baseball team before graduating in 1986. He attended college at Mary Hardin-Baylor and Tarleton State before going to work for the Victoria school district as a coach and teacher in 1994.
He was an assistant and head baseball coach at Stroman and Memorial before becoming an assistant athletic director.
"We have to focus on developing the overall student athlete," Escalona said. "That's the focus of VISD and we want to stay within that scope. We have to make sure we maintain equality across the board with male and female sports from high school to high school."
Escalona will take over for Memorial head football coach Mickey Finley, who announced in December he would step down as athletic director to continue coaching. Finley is expected to become the head coach at East.
"I think it's a matter of being fair to all involved to create some trust within our athletic department and I think we can get the community pulling in the same direction," Escalona said. "We're going to go into two schools and that rivalry is going to be welcomed and it's going to be exciting."
While Escalona will be busy setting up the programs for the new schools, he wants Memorial's final year of athletics to be a successful one.
"Before we get too far into what's going on with the new schools, we've got to finish out the year as the Victoria Memorial Vipers," Escalona said. "We want to finish with a bang and I think that's very important to our kids and we're going to try and leave a lasting impression."

tstorm,
I have faith in the youth to turn the programs around in Victoria someday. What amazes me is how the adults act against those selected to lead the children and new programs.
If you looked at those list's of potential new AD's and HC's released in the VA---appears top candidates in both fields also heard about the type of support they'll receive, because they didn't apply. Once a state elite program, now you have plant workers applying.
Think ya'lls online remarks had an effect? Would you want this job?
January 17, 2010 at 7:03 a.m.Please hire all available positions from within Mr. Escalona. Don't give someone else that Victoria cancer. Keep it in house.
January 16, 2010 at 10:28 p.m.Talking about ruining programs before they even get started. Adults acting like kids. Now I see why your football program sucks.
I know one who applied for the AD job, and another who is going for a HC position.
Thankfully, that one didn't get the AD job. He has no clue how far Victoria has fallen. Headache headquarters for a AD. Now, I need to dodge one more bullet and hope the coach don't get selected. Not what it once was there. Talking about a coach not having support. Hopeless cause.
January 16, 2010 at 10:06 p.m.tstorm5, I like your passion! Since The Powers That Be have destroyed the Raiders and the Stings forever, I say, let's have some fun. I'll be driving back home to catch the first Titan/Warrior football game, and I must say, I can't wait. Of course, I'll be sporting my Stingaree attire. Let's go Titans!!!!!!!
January 16, 2010 at 9:29 p.m.Tstorm who gave you the right to the the warriors ambassador? I know its all in fun but it dose get a little annoying. Im all for moving forward and will back the warriors no mater who is chosen as coach. But that dosnt mean that voicing an opinion about whats going on at visd weather you like it or hate it is a bad thing.
January 16, 2010 at 9:56 a.m.ive worked with coach finley 7 years and i cant remember a single sunday that we werent allowed to go to church. we come in at 1 on sundays just like most programs.
January 16, 2010 at 7:53 a.m.Facts are facts. Finley's performance did not warrant him being handed one of the jobs. Maybe the coach at the other high school won't require his coaches to miss church on Sunday morning's to review film.
January 15, 2010 at 9:42 p.m.RAH-RAH GO WEST
January 15, 2010 at 7:51 p.m.RAH-RAH GO EAST
RAH-RAH I'LL GO AWAY
NO ONE HEARS WHAT WE SAY ANYWAY
jabee - I am sure they all got asked the same questions. "Can you work with a employee who at one time was your boss".
I have said before give them a job but get new HEAD COACHES. Otherwise Mr. Escalona you gonna have a rough year and trying to startup on top of that. Ask Finley, lol.
Parents, students, employees are waiting for your decision - - will be transferring away from the zone that retains their same coach.
January 15, 2010 at 7:28 p.m.By the way, since my granddaughter is 3 and if her mom doesn't move in the next 11 or 12 years, she will go to east.
My crystal ball is broke, they may not even live in Victoria by then.
Anyway, GO STINGS!!!!
Class of 1976
January 15, 2010 at 6:22 p.m.LOL, now that was funny tstorm,
You do make a very good point though, even if there is a couple of leftovers from MHS, one a Ad, one a head coach, and the same old superintendent, this IS A BRAND NEW START.
I agree tstorm, people need to quite the byching, and take advantage of this new start for VISD.
January 15, 2010 at 5:59 p.m.SteveO, the VISD had some extra money from you & the resr of us taxpayers they had to use in this search. Hadn't spent it all on new schools ect.
Jabee4me, conspiracy theory, Good OLd Boy Network cover up, Say it's not true.
Also does anyone have the names of this mysterious search committee????
Must remember Mr Finely was not in the top 3 in the last search committees list but still was given the keys to the castle.
GOOD JOB MR moore
January 15, 2010 at 1:38 p.m.I would like to congratulate VISD, and in particular the search committee, on conducting an in-depth and intensive National Search. It is obvious that no stone was left unturned. They went wide and far to identify the most qualified and strongest applicants. Upon discovering five great candidates, massive amounts of research were poured into the selection of Mr.Escolona.
In the future, why waste everyone's time and energy?
The guy was in the system, everyone knew him, he is who you wanted to hire, why not just elevate him? Do not go through the false process of an "in-depth search".
I mean to take nothing away from Mr. Escolona. But really now VISD?? We had to go through this process to reach this result??
January 15, 2010 at 12:11 p.m.The initial first selection for AD did not get accepted (in a closed meeting) because he wouldn't promise to keep Finley on board. Imagine that, hiring someone with fresh ideas and good judgement of character.
January 15, 2010 at 11:51 a.m.Escalona will spend his first day as the Victoria school district's athletic director meeting with Superintendent Bob Moore and personnel director Eloy Chapa to expedite the process of hiring coaches for the new high schools, which open in August.
Who wants to bet that M Finely has a chair in that meeting. Good Old Boy Network Group meeting with Hugs all around.
January 15, 2010 at 11:39 a.m.Everyone should have listened closely to Bob Moore last night. He said Finley does not have to interview and he absolutely is a Head Coach and he said most likely it will be East. That's a fact, he stated it.
The only question now is, Who will Coach the West?
My opinion, The West in time, will dominate every sport. Actually they will dominate every sport sooner than later.
January 15, 2010 at 11:24 a.m.I really don't understand all the hate that is flying around in all of these blogs. Coaching is more than W's-L's and x's & o's. It's about getting the trust from your kids and teaching them a sport and learning life leasons from this sport. How do you excpect these coaches to get any respect from your kids if you the parents are bashing his head coach or assistant coach and whole athletic department? Do people come and watch you at work and write a blog about what you do wrong at work or what they like and not like about what you do? Then what makes it fair for you to judge people? All I ask is to give these guys a chance. No, a state championship wont happen over night and yes it may take 2,3,5 or more years to get these schools established in the new coaches system. Have faith and stop the bashing.
January 15, 2010 at 11:05 a.m.Congrats Escalona, I wish you the best and pray the city of Victoria will do the same.
Tommy T. I respect the heck out of you man but I know Ralph for what he is. When he had the opportunity to help someone out he wouldn't man up but rather tucked tail and ran. His explanation was that it "Was'nt about him". The real story is that he didn't want to risk his standing with M. Finley and Bob Moore.
So the statement about being fair to everyone and building trust rings pretty hollow with me.
The coaches that are not in the "Golf Club" better watch their backs. The new AD certainly won't.
January 15, 2010 at 10:59 a.m.Why would Cuero and Refugio care? They are in totally different classifications.
January 15, 2010 at 10:35 a.m.Congrats VISD on AD selection. Bring Jerry Campbell back in to coach the other H.S. and you will have completed the trifecta of football failures we have come to expect. Cuero and Refugio is busting a gut in laughter.
January 15, 2010 at 10:20 a.m.You have to be kidding. Go old boy system. ENOUGH SAID
January 15, 2010 at 10:17 a.m.Congrats Mr. Escalona and good luck in your new position.
East Side, East Side, East Side, East Side!
January 15, 2010 at 10:07 a.m.GOOD OLD BOY NETWORK;
In the future, Mr Finley to Mr Escalona---"Ralph; Bob & I got you this job. How dare you try to step up & tell me NO."
Its only gonna bet better from here on in.
January 15, 2010 at 9:29 a.m.I hope this decision works out but didn't Escalona report to Finley up until he resigned to continue coaching? Now Finley is going to report Escalona. Nothing against either man as I don't know either one of them but is this really going to be a workable situation?
January 15, 2010 at 9:21 a.m.I am sure alot of folks are curious about this hiring so you open up the story online and see the article. WOW?
"VISD BOARD ELECTS NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR" as headline.
a cap?
cool, disappointing for tstorm5 since cap is facing EAST, lol
January 15, 2010 at 8:51 a.m.Surprise, surprise look who the New AD is, WOW!!! Hopefully he will prove most of us wrong, but I bet he's helpin' Mickey pick out his new office colors at East. Way to go Mr. Moore.........
January 15, 2010 at 8:44 a.m.damn tstorm is excited haha
January 15, 2010 at 8:30 a.m.CONGRATULATIONS Ralph Escalona!!!
January 15, 2010 at 7:28 a.m.Your Family, Your Friends, Your Community and VISD
are very proud of your accomplishments.
