CUERO - Vandalism didn't dampen the spirits of visitors to the annual Christmas in the Park holiday lights display.

The lights and other holiday displays that are open from the Monday before Thanksgiving through New Year's Day night, attracted 13,200 vehicles, about 2,000 above average, said Mary Polansky of the December Events Committee that sponsors the displays.

Vandalism in the weeks leading up to the opening of the displays threatened to spoil what has become for many an annual pilgrimage to Cuero.

Two 17-year-olds, Scott Rogers and Shane Torres, were arrested and charged with felony criminal mischief. Both are free on bond and are expected to appear in court in March.

Two of the damaged or destroyed displays included the popular American Flag and the paddlewheel exhibits. Polansky said both exhibits would return next year.

"People from Victoria and the entire Crossroads area were so generous in their comments, concerns, and donations," said Polansky. "We had many people from Austin, San Antonio, Houston and beyond make the trip to Cuero just to see the lights."

  • Are we still dragging on about those boys..I know what they did was horrible and wrong, and are getting punished, but are their names going to be published throughout the Victoria Advocate forever or what..They got more publicity then when Someone dear to us was murdered in Victoria few years back...Come up with some different news already..
