Cynthia Buttram receives the Texas GenWeb Web site of the Year Award from Kenneth Booth, Victoria County Genealogical Society President.

Cynthia Buttram, Web coordinator of the Victoria County Genealogical Society Web page, along with her husband, Jack Buttram, recently won the prestigious Web Site of the Year Award from the Texas GenWeb Project.

Each month a Texas County Web site is selected, and this past February, the Victoria County Genealogical Society's Web page was selected as February's winner.

In December, monthly winners were reviewed and the outstanding Web site was selected. The Victoria County Genealogical Society was selected as Web site of the Year: www.rootsweb.com/~txvicto2/.

The Buttrams recently received word of winning the prestigious award from the TXGenWeb Society. In fact, the announcement is so recent, it is yet to be posted on the Web site for Winners found at www.txgenweb.org/tx/surfing/Winners/index.htm.

Criteria for selection as TXGenWeb site of the month are rigorous and require correct formatting and spelling, attractive logos, query links, be genealogy focused, user friendly and offer numerous records for both genealogical and historical research. TXGenWeb is part of the U.S. GenWeb project found online at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txgenweb/.

Researchers will find search engines for all Texas counties sponsoring Web sites offering digitized genealogy and historical records, along with links to additional resources for state and county records.

Shirley Cullum, TXGenWeb State Coordinator, said "The TXGenWeb Project is a grass-roots all-volunteer genealogical/historical effort. Each county Web page is commercial free and contains useful tips, online databases particular to that area, volunteer lookups, surname queries, descriptions of local libraries, historical background information, contact information, and much more. All information is free."

To visit the award-winning Victoria County Genealogical Society Web site designed by the Buttrams, go online to www.rootsweb.com/~txvicto2/.

Here you will find Victoria County records, library resources, cemetery records, Indianola reconstructed records, people of Victoria County, military records and extensive Victoria County Genealogical Society links, including members, quarterlies, researchers, lookups, surnames and old Victoria County post cards.

Streep, Colbert set for PBS Genealogy Show

PBS says its new show "Faces of America" uses the latest tools in genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 11 renowned Americans.

The series is set to air Wednesdays from Feb. 10 to March 3. Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. will host the show.

"Looking to the wider immigrant experience, Professor Gates unravels the American tapestry, following the threads of his guests' lives back to their origins around the globe. Along the way, the many stories he uncovers - of displacement and homecoming, of material success and dispossession, of assimilation and discrimination - illuminate the American experience," according to a PBS new release this week.

"Professor Gates's guests include poet Elizabeth Alexander, who composed and read the poem at President Barack Obama's inauguration, chef Mario Batali, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Louise Erdrich, writer Malcolm Gladwell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, film director Mike Nichols, Her Royal Highness Queen Noor, actress Eva Longoria, actress Meryl Streep and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi." This sounds very interesting.

Happy researching.
