The Summer Food Nutrition Program has gotten off to a rousing start.

In June the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent distributed 186,290 pounds of food to 1,190 families in 11 counties.

During the next three months, the food bank expects to make an additional 33 food distributions that will serve about 3,000 families.

The Food Bank of the Golden Crescent is one of 13 Texas Food Banks that have been awarded federal stimulus funds from the to provide up to 50 pounds of food to families with children under the age of 18.

The food bank is supplementing the food boxes with donations from area retailers.
