Kloesel's Steakhouse & Bar in Moulton celebrates 40 years with a bash

TIMELINE1970 - Harvey and Diana Kloesel open their steakhouse.
1971 - The Kloesels move to their Moore Avenue location.
1975 - The Kloesels buy a restaurant and bar in Gonzales. Five years later, they sell the business to focus on the Moulton steakhouse.
1978 - The Kloesels move out of the apartment above the steakhouse and into a new home. The steakhouse apartment was turned into a dining area and bar.
1981 - The restaurant's upstairs bar was expanded to include a dance floor and more seating.
1997 - A historical marker is erected to mark Kloesel's Steakhouse & Bar as the site of the Moore Hotel, a historical landmark built 100 years before.
MOULTON - Owners of Kloesel's Steakhouse & Bar celebrated the restaurant's 40th anniversary on Sunday by throwing a six-hour bash.
The steakhouse, at 101 Moore Ave. in Moulton, provided more than 100 customers a DJ, games and free food.
Harvey Kloesel, the restaurant's 63-year-old co-owner, cooked food - brisket, ribs, sausage and more - on his famous Space Cooker, a grill in the shape of a spaceship.
"We threw a major party," said Diana Kloesel, the restaurant's 61-year-old co-owner and Harvey's wife.
The Kloesels opened their restaurant in July 1970 inside a small cafe next door to the Moulton Post Office. They later moved to their current location, a historic building they also once called home. The couple resided for years in the building's upstairs living quarters, which were later turned in to a dining hall and bar.
The building stands in the location of the old Moore Hotel, which was built in 1888. The hotel was demolished in 1940 by owners who built in its place a grocery store and meat market using lumber from the hotel.
Thirty years later, the Kloesels remodeled the building into a steakhouse, which it has remained since.
"Well, 40 years have gone by so fast," Harvey Kloesel said. "The restaurant business is a wonderful business, I've always thought. To make people happy just makes me happy. Doing that just made the years fly by."
The restaurant is 50 miles north of Victoria. Sunday's anniversary bash drew loyal customers from as far away as Corpus Christi, Harvey Kloesel said.
The steakhouse's staff makes all its food, including breads and dressings, from scratch. Most people tout the meats and the service.
"We've made so many friends and customers over the years," Diana Kloesel said. "Even former employees came by on Sunday and said hi. It was pretty cool."
The Kloesels urged customers to remember the anniversary doesn't mark the restaurant's closing - but rather a new chapter.
"It's just been a wonderful 40 years and now it's going to be business as usual," Diana Kloesel said. "We're just going to keep on trucking."
