CUERO - Two brothers were shot outside their father's home about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Eugene Gamez, 42, and Hector "Pico" Gamez, 29, were shot in the driveway of 508 Evers St., according to their father, Frank Gamez.

Another one of his five sons, 26-year-old Isaac Gamez, was killed in a shooting Feb. 26 in Cuero.

DeWitt County Sheriff Jode Zavesky confirmed the shooting but said the police department would be handling the investigation.

Capt. Steven Ellis of the Cuero Police Department said he could not give any information until Police Chief Chris Hernandez, who Ellis said was out of town, OKs the release.

"We still have follow-ups we have to conduct," Ellis said Wednesday night.

Frank Gamez, who lives in the house with his wife, Delia, said the shooting was a drive-by and that a shotgun was used.

A shotgun was also used in Isaac's killing.

"I was inside eating and I heard 'boom, boom, boom,'" the teary-eyed father said. "I came outside and my sons were lying on the ground."

The father said he heard nine shots. It's unclear how many times the brothers were hit.

Police had spray-painted around at least three blood stains in the grass near the road.

Police were gone by 8:30 Wednesday night and pedestrians filled the neighborhood.

The father was standing outside his home with a large group of people he said were family members.

"I'm staying here because they're going to come back and do something crazy," the father said of the gunmen. "My wife took off to see how my sons are doing."

The elder Gamez said both Eugene and Hector were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Victoria.

A spokesperson at DeTar Hospital Navarro said Hector was in stable condition at 10:20 p.m.

Eugene's condition was unknown Wednesday night.

Erin Smith, a friend of the Gamez family, said the brothers were "very well-thought-of boys. Prayer is what is most important at this time."

Frank said he thinks the same group of people that killed Isaac in February are behind this shooting.

"Jesus Christ, what do they want? They're trying to take my whole family," he said, as he clung to a house phone awaiting more information.
