Victoria sergeant receives bronze star

First Sergeant Juan V. Benavidez Jr.

Army National Guard 1st Sgt Juan V. Benavidez Jr. of Victoria, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Texas Federal Service Medal and the Texas Combat Service Ribbon for exceptionally meritorious service while assigned as a light infantry company first sergeant for the 1-141st Inf Battalion, 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team 36th, Infantry Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 09-10.

Benavidez is the son of Caroline Hernandez. His wife is Tila Benavidez. Both are of Victoria.

He is a 1985 graduate of Stroman High School.

Navy Seaman Recruit Jolene E. Gilbreath recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Gilbreath is a 2005 graduate of Karnes County Academy in Karnes City.

Army ROTC Cadet Amber L. Smith is one of 275 cadets who attended the 2010 George C. Marshall Foundation Reserve Officer Training Corps Awards and Leadership Seminar in Lexington, Va.

Smith is the daughter of Tal D. and Joni L. Smith of Victoria.

Air Force Airman Andrew Wingenroth graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Wingenroth is the son of April Drury of Victoria, and Randy Wingenroth of Schertz. He is a 2008 graduate of Byron P. Steele II High School in Cibolo.

Air Force Airman Darren M. Gwosdz graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Gwosdz is a 2005 graduate of Memorial High School in Victoria.

Air Force Airman Mark M. De La Garza graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

He is the son of Henry and Sally DeLaGarza of Victoria.

De La Garza is a 2008 graduate of MacArthur High School in San Antonio.
