The American Red Cross off Navarro Street had a Zumbathon. Zumba is a form of dancing and workout.

Jingle, jingle, jingle, jingle, jingle.

At the same time 11 women shook their belly dancer skirts to Zumba, the American Red Cross Heroes Campaign shook their money jar.

Saturday's Zumba-thon was another fundraising event set out to mix fun activity for a good cause, said Debbie Ramirez, campaign co-chair.

"Everybody loves Zumba," Ramirez said. "I'm very grateful for them."

Zumba is anaerobic workout that mixes fast-paced movement with fast-paced music.

The campaign has had a 5K, a haircut-a-thon and several other events since its May 25 kickoff.

Becky Salazar saw the morning workout as a two-way street.

While helping better her health, she was also helping the campaign.

"I have high blood pressure. It's a good cardio workout," said the Victoria resident, who took a break from the fast-beat cardio routine. "I think it's a great idea. It's for a good cause."

Heroes for the American Red Cross is grassroots campaign in which people pledge to raise $1,000 for the local Red Cross chapter.

The money is used to help the Crossroads chapter continue to provide services for those who need it.

Already the campaign has met their $5,000 goal, Ramirez said.

A Brazilian salsa tune kicked in and Salazar was quick to mimic the Zumba instructor.

She even added her own moves when she began to feel the rhythm.

Salazar's inspiration to move is why Zumba instructor Debbie Garcia, who instructs at the DeTar Health Center and with her church, enjoys doing her job.

"They need some kind of stress reliever," Garcia said. "It's important to just see them smile."

The campaign will have another event in the coming weeks.

The heroes campaign will have a Victoria General's game ticket sale in which 50 percent of the tickets sold will be donated to the campaign.
