Shooting detailsIn February, four were arrested in connection with the shooting death of Isaac Gamez, brother of the victims in the latest shooting.

Eugene Gamez, 33, and Hector "Pico" Gamez, 29, were shot in the driveway of their father's home on the 500 block of Evers St. Wednesday.

CUERO - The two men sought in connection with Wednesday night's shooting of two Cuero brothers turned themselves in.

About 1 a.m. Saturday, Broderick Jackson and Shakeal Mayfield, both 18 of Cuero, surrendered at the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office.

They are charged with attempted murder, child endangerment, deadly conduct and engaging in organized criminal activity.

On Wednesday night, brothers Eugene Gamez and Hector Gamez were shot and wounded in the driveway of their father's home.

Jackson and Mayfield are in the Dewitt County Jail on a $570,000 bond each. The Cuero Police Department continues to investigate the case.

In February, the Gamezes' younger brother was shot to death. People close to the suspects say the two sides have been feuding since then.

News the men had been jailed did not so much as calm Cuero residents as it did incite frustration among some of them, fed up with the ongoing violence.

Cuero native Susie Sparks and her prayer group hope this ends the violence.

"We are praying the shooting will quit in Cuero," she said, silver crosses dangling from her ears and neck. "That's enough of that. They need to put a lid on it."

Petra Owen, a lifelong resident, still feels safe in the town even with the violent feuding, but she was relieved to learn that the men were caught, she said. Though, she said she will continue to avoid the west Cuero neighborhood in which the shootings took place.

Kurt Hudgeons said violence in Cuero seems to be increasing of late.

"It's pitiful. That's all I know," Hudgeons said about this latest shooting. "It's a sad deal."
