Head-on wreck near Refugio kills 2
REFUGIO - Two men died Thursday in a head-on collision on South U.S. Highway 77 about eight miles south of state Highway 239. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Ty Michael Salyer, 29, of Alvin, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu north in the southbound lane when he struck a southbound GMC pickup driven by Steven Alan Miller, 40, of Magnolia, said Ester Landeros, Department of Public Safety communications operator.
Both were alone in their vehicles
The highway has four lanes divided by a median.
Both men were wearing seatbelts, DPS Trooper Jeremy Rowland said.
Rowland said his department responded to the call at 9:28 a.m.
The south-bound lanes of U.S. Highway 77 were closed at state Highway 239 from 10:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Frances Garza said.
Although officials were not able to determine the speed the vehicles were traveling, Rowland said the damage indicated they were likely traveling at highway speeds.
"It's almost like they ran right into each other," he said.
He added they probably did not see each other.
Rowland said details would remain hazy after the investigation because neither of the occupants survived.
"We'll never know why he was driving on the wrong side of traffic because he is not with us here to answer our questions," he said. "That's going to be our factor."
