Victoria man sentenced to life in prison

June 9, 2010 at 1:09 a.m.

A Victoria man was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday, after he was found guilty of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.

During the punishment hearing, district Judge Robert Cheshire said he sentenced 38-year-old Lawrence Benny Brown Jr. to life in hopes of protecting the residents of Victoria County, according to a news release.

Brown's crime dates back to Oct. 10, when a witness alerted the Victoria Police Department after seeing Brown exchange something with another individual in front of a convenience store.

Before officers could catch up to Brown, he had already discarded more than 4 grams of crack cocaine out of his window, according to the news release.

He was arrested shortly thereafter.

While awaiting trial, Brown became angry with his wife, because she ended their relationship.

Then on March 22, Brown shot at least 15 times into a home occupied by his wife, according to the news release.

No one was injured in the shooting.

"The citizen that informed the police department about this defendant's actions should be commended. She should be proud of her actions to help law enforcement clean up Victoria," said Elí Garza, assistant district attorney for Victoria County in the news release. "In addition, the Victoria Police Department worked hard to get this drug dealer off the streets."
