Downed power lines start fire, close State Highway 111 in Midfield
BY KAYLA BELL
MIDFIELD - A hay cutter pulled and knocked down power lines and two telephone poles in downtown Midfield on Tuesday.
Fallen lines started a small grass fire and left the city without power for more than six hours.
A pickup pulling hay equipment headed west on State Highway 111 when the hay cutter snagged the lines. The snag caused a grass fire, which spanned about 25 feet in diameter, according to Midfield Fire Chief Vic Collins.
The Markham Fire Department also responded to the fire, which was contained to just the grass.
The downed power lines left 237 people without power, said Elgin Janssen, manager of community affairs for American Electric Power. By 5:40 p.m., power was restored to all customers.
State Highway 111 was reopened shortly thereafter.
